Crazy shifting auto before and after TPS adj.

Okay so I've been starting to drive my truck a little more recently since I finally got her running after fighting the turbo noise for the last six months. Back when I was trying to diagnose the noise I attempted adjusting the TPS because I couldn't time the stupid thing. Anyways I must have screwed it up because it started shifting real weird, like it couldn't decide on whether to shift into second or third under partial load. If you got after it or just slowly accelerated then it wasn't a problem. Also my fuel mileage was really horrible at 8 miles to the gallon out of my first tank. So I filled up again and after I only got a hundred miles to a half tank I decided it was time to try adjusting the tps again. So yesterday I tore the throttle body back off and set it according to the 4crawler web site. I did the best I could and got the closed throttle ohms between the vta and e2 terminals to around 700 ohms, but had to cheat on the idl to e2 setting. It says to use a .85mm feller gauge to get the open circuit reading but I had to open the throttle up to at least .95mm before reading open or the first test would read over the specified 800 ohms max. They made it sound like the first setting was more important so I kept it at 700 and put it back together. After I put it back on everything seemed to be awesome. I could finally adjust my timing like I was supposed to and the shifting felt tons better, or at least I thought. I only drove it around the city to were it wouldn't get above 35mph and I thought everything was cured. Then when I headed off to work I sped up to 60 and the stupid tranny started shifting between 3rd and overdrive like a crack addict! I either had to mash the throttle or slow down and take the overdrive off to get it to stop. So anyways after all my talking and rambling, I was wondering If any of you smart guys might have an idea of what is going on here? I know some of you might tell me to do a 5-speed swap, but that will be my last resort. I hate driving manuals and I think autos are the only way to go, mostly cuz I'm lazy

Unclip the TPS from the harness. If there is a problem there, your idle should be high (1500-2000rpm) and it should be smooth.

Make sure you check the wiring from ECM to the TPS. I have had problems with timing and idle speed on mine for years. I finally checked the wiring and found out I have a bad Vcc wire. I just havnt taken the time to pull the harness apart to fix it...

Yea I was thinking I might dig into that when it warms up here. Is it getting horrible gas mileage with that bad wire? Whats weird is mine runs, idles, and everything awesome now. Well except for it doesn't idle fast when cold, which I have been looking into too.

Well, I get pretty good mileage (14mpg in the winter), about 18mpg mixed. I just have a problem with the idle changing (at every stop light, and in drivethroughs) and when I put a jumper in the TE1 and E1 connector, the idle does NOT drop...

Try that, make sure the idle is dropping correctly....

I know that when I jump the TE1 and E1 my idle does drop. That was the problem I was having before I adjusted it. Now it drops and I could time it correctly.

Is there anything else that tells the tranny when to shift? I don't remember seeing a kick down cable
