A Little Help Here...!!
OK, I'm having a problem withe !@$%#(*@# shifter. When I bolt it down, it won't go into any of the forward gears (1st, 3rd, 5th). I acts like the shifter is too far forward and won't go forward enough to engage those gears. I can shift it with my fingers into 1st, etc., but then I can't get the shifter in. WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING WRONG??!!!? I'm about to take an axe to it at this point. It's REALLY pissing me the hell off!
Here's pics:

Also, what's this little tit at the top of the transmission on the passenger side? It looks like something was on there, but I'll be damned if I can figure out what.

I found this in the bottom of the rear end diff:

It sounds like you have the shifter assembly 180 degrees out of phase. Flip it 180 degrees and work it through the gears before you bolt it down. I did the same thing when I replaced the shifter seat and bushing and the shifter nearly took out my radio.

Now I have bigger problems. Earlier today, I started it for a few seconds to make sure it would run. This resulted in a leak from the stupid cheapass oil filter (had a hole in it!) and ended up pumping about a quart of oil onto the ground. Fixed THAT.
I started her up later and she ran great, got the timing & idle set, no leaks, ran it for about 15 or 20 minutes. When I shut it off, I looked underneath and there was a GIANT pool of oil this time; oil pressure had stayed good the entire time! I figure I probably dumped 2 or 3 quarts of oil onto the pavement. It was getting dark and I've HAD IT for today, so I just did a cursory look and saw oil all around the pan gasket. Don't know for sure if it's coming from there or somewhere else. I think I've forgotten something. Both front & rear seals were installed correctly. Oil pressure sending unit is in good. WTF have I done/not done??? I'm so damn tired & fed up right now...

Gary,
I am off to bed but had an idea - I know you said the leak may be coming from the pan gasket -- did you use "the right stuff" on both sides of the baffle?
the idea I had was on the valve covers- did you use sealant on the corners like the FSM shows? Did you use sealant on the number one and number 5 bearing caps for the cams?
also check your oil cooler -
Just some things I thought of -- trying to be helpful
Good Luck,
Kat

I found the problem; my cam seal on the passenger side popped out. I guess I had used too much FIPG when I installed it and it pushed it right out, so I had cleaned it off and reinstalled it before & put everything together. I guess I should had cleaned it more thoroughly & put more FIPG in there. That's what I get for trying to shortcut...

SHE LIVES!! Running GREAT now!! I have to say I'm just giddy after all this time & effort & my truck is finally running and running GOOD!
A weird thing is happening; whenever I run up pretty quickly past 3000 rpm & then shift, the brake light comes on for a second after I let off the throttle. It consistently does it time after time. However, if I run it up over 3000 rpm SLOWLY, it doesn't do it. It seems to have something to do with closing the throttle after a quick burst...??? Bizarre...
Here's a video of the first drive showing the weird shifty thing with the brake light:

About 3 years ago, I swerved to avoid a deer & hit a sign instead.
I figured out what the brake light thing was (I'm such a retard); the brake fluid resevoir was about 1/16" below the "minimum" level & when I made a sudden move, it would make the low fluid indicator come on!! That was EASY after all the other shiznit I've gone through lately.
Does anyone have any idea what the extra part (above a few posts) is??

Drove her to work today (50 miles) and she's running GREAT! I did have a couple of oddities:
1. When I turn left at speed (G-forces to the right) there is a buzzing electrical contact sound under the dash & the "4x4" light flashes in time with the buzz. WTF?!?
2. My left headlight doesn't work on low beam. I think this is probably an electrical issue as I just replaced BOTH headlights less then a year ago.
It's good to have her back on the road!
Anybody have any ideas about that spare bracket???
