I got well on my way to getting the engine back in the truck yesterday. I got the flywheel on & entire left bank done. I had the head sitting on top of the block at one point and it started to slip off; I made a headfirst dive to catch it before it hit the ground & cut my right index finger pretty good! Note to self: Put a head bolt in there to hold it in place next time!

The only thing holding me off is a replacement head gasket (had to remove the right head to take back to the machine shop) which should arrive around Wed this week. I'm thinking about going ahead & putting the crossover pipe on and putting the engine back in the truck first. Any thoughts?

Yesterday's pics:

Indicentally, the valves clearances were within spec without having to add any new shims...not all EXACTLY the same, but at this point, I'm settling for within FSM specs.

Wow, I just realized I almost forgot to put the rear freeze plugs in; that would have SUCKED! I had this visual image of starting her up and water POURING out the back of the engine...

The head almost slipped off? Yikes! I take it you didn't have the studs in?...well, obviously. That would make installing the heads a bit easier...help the keep the gasket in place. Yeah, and put the heads and crossover pipe on first befor installing...atleast the crossover. BTW, why no y-pipe?

What kind of oil filler cap is that? Toyota? I've never seen one like that.

I was stupid & left mine sitting on the engine & lost it driving down the road. Not sure where that one came from; I got it from a local mechanic.

Y pipe is just too much effort at this point. maybe down the road...

Plus you have to run it under the tranny, reducing ground clearance.

Just finished

Hey just did the head gaskets on wifes 95 runner. Recommend you take lots of digital photos before and during. Saved my ass. Also get a block tester and follow the directions before you start. Don't count on a compression tester alone. There may be an internal leak thats allowing exhaust gases to get into the coolant. Its actually not that hard with the digital photo thingy. My first time and it fired right up after finishing. You can read about it in the newbie tech area. Heh. I got lots of help from this forum actually. Took me about a month but I had a (Laproscopic Neissen Fundoplication) (google it heh) in the middle of it so some time on my ass was spent. Anyways I'm now a bigggggg fan of digital photos for this kind of stuff unless of course your an expert already heh. Hell NM you are well into it. Didnt read the rest of the forum.

Peace

Dude, I just dropped the engine/tranny into the BAY! WOO HOO! Got the transmission hooked up and engine dropped in BY MYSELF. Took about 45 minutes to get it all lined up, but she's in there now! Now I just have to get the right head on & get it all connected. Waiting on that head gasket then I'll be driving it next weekend.

YEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW!!!!!!!!!

"yeehaw"....so does that mean you are excited?

PS - You did put some sort of HEAVY lubricant over the shims before installing the cams right? And the same for the bearing surfaces of the cams? Reason being they are going to be spinning at somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000 rpm at idle for a few seconds before oil hits 'em...

Good work Gary! Glad to see some progress...

So, in your estimation, would there be room to drop the motor/trans in with both headers attached?(i am just getting back to working on mine)

Just a LITTLE bit excited...

EVERY moving part in this engine is absolutley dripping with STP oil treatment. It's akin to 140 weight gear oil, only stickier. The shim "buckets", cams, pistons, piston rings, cylinder walls, all bearings, & everything else that rubs against something is dripping in it. It's gonna smoke like a big dog when I start it, but who cares? The O2 sensor is already toasted from the coolant that was spewing thru the exhaust before I shut it down for the last time.

I'll post some pics; shortly; didn't get as many as I wanted to due to time constraints trying to get this puppy in the truck before too late.

I wouldn't do it. It is hard enough to get the motor mounts lined up without having to deal with headers in the way. You'll have a helluva time getting your FIPG on the tranny then getting it lined up and together before the FIPG dries too much. I was busting my butt trying to get the tranny aligned and the stupid passenger side motor mount was being difficult. All I can say is get the motor PERFECTLY level, side to side, before you lift it with the hoist & drop it in.

That said, it actually went in pretty easily, considering I was by myself.

Just for *blank*s & grins, here's a pic of which side of the clutch disc goes TOWARD the flywheel:

... and which side goes toward the clutch cover:

Pay attention to the tightening sequence for the clutch & look in the hole to ensure that it's even, even after you use the alignment tool. The clutch cover only uses 14 ft/lbs of torque!

More detailed pics of the throwout bearing:

The flywheel. BE SURE you put the top plate between the flywheel & engine BEFORE you put the flywheel on. I had to put it on TWICE. There is also a little 10mm screw that holds the plate on, be sure you put THIS in before you put the flywheel on as well. I just left the 10mm screw off after putting the flywheel on twice.

Clutch goes in:

Then the cover:

Checking to make sure the clutch disc is even on all sides:

and her she is in the engine bay:

I was hoping to0 have this thing running today, but several factors conspired to make me truckless for yet another day. Here's todays pics from the last couple of days; I'm too dang tired to comment:

Anyone have a suggestion for how to push the clutch slave back into the cylinder?

Ok, isn't something supposed to go on the bottom tit on this thing??

I know, I know; the last two pics show the distributor in the wrong position; that has been remedied.

About two hours work tomorrow & she'll be on the street! WHEW! Long day....

TNRabbit, I recall seeing the routing for the lines leading to/from the blue nipples in the Factory Service Manual. I have a pic of mine during disassembly.. it might help some.

THANKS! The top line goes to the charcoal canister I obviously had the bottom hose connected to the top.

It's called the TVV. Practically everyone breaks it. I didn't because I've been reading on the BB for a year how everyone breaks them!

There are a couple of threads in here on how to fix it. Search on TVV in this forum only. There seems to be a problem with the search function this morning, so you may have to wait.
