Couple of rebuild questions
I have a 92 Pickup with the 22RE that is fixing to get rebuilt. Unfortunately due to a busy work schedule I don't get to try this myself. I've never rebuilt one anyway so maybe its for the best. But right now there is a few different possibilities for now, all depend on what the mechanic says when he tears it apart tomorrow.
The motor threw a rod is the reason for the rebuild. So here are my options:
Worst case, messed up block and head, in which case i'll be buying a used motor and a rebuild kit. So not many questions there.
Best scenario; no damage to block or head and just a rebuild kit and crank kit. Highly unlikely i suppose but nice to think positive.
Here's where i have questions, if it were to only damage the block, I've found a .40 over block cheap. I know i would need bigger pistons, which engnbldr offers in a kit, along with the bigger cam i think i'd like. If I get the bigger pistons will I need a different crank kit for it? Or does the regular one work?
I'll know more details tomorrow and will update accordingly, just wanted to get a jump on it if possible. Also is the engnbldr kit pretty good or should i look elsewhere?
I don't know a whole lot about all this but hope to learn.

Your crank is your crank piston size has nothing to do with it.
However being that you may have spun a rod bearing depending on how bad that journal is damaged you may need the crank turned and then need oversize bearings .
Then if the damage is to bad time for new crank one never knows till it is all apart.

Got some good news back, didn't really mess anything up too bad. Rebuilding with a kit, new crank kit, oil pump, water pump, and thermostat and should be good to go. The truck has had a new timing chain put in with metal guides that are still in good shape. Parts came out to just under $600, and for another $800 he pulled the motor, took apart, rebuilding it, putting it back in and putting my header on. I didn't think that was too bad, especially since i don't really have any other options.
