Cost of a "new" 3.0 3vze

well whoever rebuild this engine before me didn't know how to do anything the right way. after blowing a head gasket and taking it down to the shop, they found several (a lot) of things that aren't done right and the best option might be to drop in another block. I'd like to drop in a 3.4 but i think that might be a little out of the question (sounds like that swap is close to $5k) So i'm wondering...how much is a 3.0? Anyone in Flagstaff, AZ got a good 3.0 they wanna get rid of?

I did a bunch of research on this a couple of months ago (arond the SLC area) and I didn't find anything cheaper than $2000. If you want to do it cheaper you can buy a rebuilt lower section, (is that called a long block?) and then get your existing heads rebuilt if they need it and slap them on. You should be able to find a rebuilt long block for around $1000.

Generally:

short block = pistons/block/crank
Long block = oil pan to valve covers

you really should consider the extra cash for a 3.4 its very very worth it. if not, try a 22rte or somethin

Get ready for an avalanche of "put in a 3.4" responses!

I'd check VERY CAREFULLY on here for other folks who've dealt with Jasper, Orient, Oregon Engine Builders, etc., before I bought a long block from anyone. You never know what the h@ll you're going to get with a rebuilt; could be the best engine you'll ever have, or might be a giant $h!tstorm of bad luck.

If you DO end up rebuilding, definitely get your parts thru www.engnbldr.com. They have a STERLING reputation for quality parts & going the extra mile to make sure you get what you need.

I have seen a bunch of different treads and opinions on the 3.4L swap from a 3.0L ... Can someone please tell me how much it cost to do this swap? A motor, headers, custom exhaust, motor mounts, clutch/adapter plate, and wiring harness or ecu ... I just don't undertand how that is any cheaper?

What's the cost of a 3.0?

- frustration about not being able to hold speed uphill
- ÅÅÅÅty gas mileage
- no aftermarket support

If you start factoring in the "cost of ownership" over a few years, the 3.4L swap is pretty darn cheap.

I installed a new 3.0 a few months back, 6K miles on it so far. When I'm driving it easy (Rare) I get 17MPG on 32x11.50. When I drive it hard, the lowest I have seen so far is 14MPG. Not awefully bad I guess, compared to most people.

I bought my motor from www.asapmotors.com $1,800 for the block. Great warranty and service.

A "new" rebuilt 3.0 goes for about $2900 up here in Ontario, Canada. My old man just put one in his T-100. We would have done the 3.4 swap if we could have found a nice donor rig. But the problem is they are few and far between for a good price. If you're not pressed, as in your truck is running fine, you can just keep your eye open for a good donor truck. My dad didn't have the luxury of waiting, so he just bought a rebuilt.

ouch well maybe just have to end up rebuilding it cause i'll bet having a shop do a 3.4 shop would be a ton of cash. we'll see what the shop says when they get back to me. boy to car problems suck....

got more word from the shop i'm dealing with this morning. right now we're looking into whether or not it'd be better to work with what i got meaning 2 new headers as well as close to a full rebuild or grabbing a rebuild engine from a company called Jasper (i believe it is) who has a rebuilt 3.0 ready and waiting. Now price wise...they're working on the cost of a rebuild and i know the price of the rebuilt 3.0 is $3600 which sounds pretty steep but i'm kind of in the hole here. it's hard to find 3.0's that would be worthwhile and a 3.4 conversion is way to much for a shop to do. so probably something around $5000 (for the motor and labor) for this shin dig...ouch!!!

lemme know if you guys know of any 3.0's in flagstaff, az or close by...

well once this whole issue is fixed, hopefully this 3.0 might be even a little impressive from what i'm used to...

I have a jasper in my truck. Im VERY happy with it... 60+K on it now.... but at the time it was very expensive (with clutch, headers etc)

I can pick up whole 2nd gens with poopy 3.slows all day long for $500-$1000.
I have about $600 in my rebuild done in my shop (rings, bearings, gaskets my shop, head/valve job at machine shop)

I bought my long block (with everything) for $250. (then rebuilt it for the 4runner)

I still cant get everything i need (or a donor truck) 5vze for less than 3K.

Just so you know... I paid $3400 for my 3.0 right here in Phoenix.

Did I forget to mention it came with an entire '91 4Runner for $3400.

It sounds like you don't have many choices, but might be worth investigating other options like vehicle replacement or getting a second opinion on a rebuild instead of new motor.

yeah here come the 3.4 switches...

I got a rebuilt from Orient for 2k with core swap... They are really easy to work with and give you all the parts and kits you need for the rebuilt, all you practically need are some new plugs and wires.
I looked into the 3.4, first it's more expensive and the mods needed for the switch aren't as easy as you'd think.
There is another poster who just buys salvage 3.0's when his current dies. You can find a good salvage for 500 to 1000k

I'd rather have a supra motor but a shop's doing the job so it's a little out the question to pay a s-load for labor.
