yeah.. they are!!

I noticed that when I removed the thermostat that it didn't have a gasket but an o-ring thing... is this normal? The FSM shows what I would call as gasket and I see parts sites that sell an o-ring and a gasket.. Mine wasn't leaking , BTW.

On my veezy (I know, different engine, doesn't necessarily apply to the 4-banger) it's just the o-ring - no housing gasket. In fact, using a gasket would hold the outlet out further and it wouldn't pinch the o-ring as tight, possibly causing a leak.

Being an earlier, japanese-made truck, the outlet is aluminum and fits so well that when I take the stat out and reattach the outlet (with no gasket or o-ring) to flush the system, it doesn't even leak. Gotta love that japanese quality. I agree, though, that $500 for a dealer rad from 1sttoyotaparts is a LITTLE bit steep, haha.

on a 22re it's just an o-ring that goes around the thermostat

Yep. Found that out after trying in vain to locate a gasket for the water outlet housing. A thin smear of RTV on the surface of the outlet stopped my small leak.

I just replaced my radiator, thermostat and upper/lower/lower hoses. I think I need to redo the thermostat because it was a little wet looking between the water neck and the manifold. Other than that - and burping the system several times - I think I'm good to go.

I now have to figure out what to do with my carb. It is running pretty rich. This was extremely evident while I was working in my garage over the last day doing the flushes. Even with the garage door open and the wind blowing it almost suffocated me.

I think the PO carb rebuild was poorly done. I can't believe that I'll need to buy a kit as well as a float and it will cost over $120....
