Combination switch prop(head light switch)

Ok so i got a friend with an 88 4runner thats a non-sr5 and the regular lowbeams on his combo switch don't work and he can't get them to stay workin. The high beams work but not his regualar head lights. And hes replaced the combination switch 3 times 2 of them brand new and the low beams will work alittle while then stop and go back to the way it was. ANY TIPS?

Hmmm.......I bet DeathCougar could answer that real quick like.

But, have you check for voltage at the connectors? If he's replaced the combo three times already, it's probably wiring problems = intermittent voltage.

Might try 4crawler's aftermarket wiring harness (I love mine).

I had a similar problem but no high beams. Regular lights and the pull back for high beam (passing) switch worked fine. So did the turn signals. Everything looked fine and I went to the junk yard and got another combo switch. It fixed the problem and was easyto put in. The steering wheel comes off quick and easy on Yota's without a puller.

Sounds like you have an open short somewhere, so its time to start chasing wiring.

Make absolute sure all the grounds in the truck are solid and clean, and the connections to the switch is not loose.

sounds like and intermitant short in the system .. wire casings have either melted and are now intermitentally shorting .. your not blowing any fuses ?

head lamp wires are the red ones off of the combi switch .. time to "chase" them , and find the Problem .. most likely .. it will be between the fuse box and the combi switch . Grounds are the white with black strip .. check em!

.

An open short?

That's along the lines of...

But anyhow, check the terminals in the plug from the chassis wiring to the combination switch and make sure none are loose in the plug, none are corroded and they are not expanded causing an intermittent issue between them and the switch terminals.

IIRC there is a testing proceedure outlined by 4crawler in that link I posted in post #3.

Just down from here:

Would you rather I said exposed short? Or exposed wire short circuit?

We're all just guessing here, so it could be anything.

Haha, I have this same issue as well. I tried to get the Steering Wheel off but it wouldnt budge!!! Any tricks? Can I lube it up with some WD40? It looked a bit rusty and like it had not moved in 15 years. Or is the Wheel on the 2nd Gen different to the 1st Gen?

Not looking forward to the drive to Banff with no high beams!!!

Talking

Does he want to sell the new switches

i am leaning toward bad ground somewhere

open circuit caused by a broken wire making contact for awhile hit a bump.

Was it beyond your skills at this time to check the switch to make sure it works or is broke
work before replacing it 3 times.

Quick fix is to make new grounds right off the head light plugs if it is a bad ground also check the fuse that it is not loose or corroded in the fuse block
