cold start knock

Well I started the truck after siting at work for 10hrs, and it knocked for a few sec. It is the first time I have ever heard it knock. It just turned 180K too! Oil has been looking good, oil change about 1k ago.

I bought a '93 pickup with a 22RE that had a startup knock. A few months later the engine went. It had 186k miles. Not trying to scare you. It could be you just need a new timing chain or something.

What year make and model are we talking about? Is it a high pitched noise or more like a dead thump?

When was the timing chain done? If the timing chain is stretched and the guides are broken, the chain will slap against the cover and will make a metal on metal sound until there is enough oil to quieten it. This also happens with the valvetrain on a 22r/e when there is not enough oil circulation.

I suggest pull the valve cover and adjust the valves per the FSM. Also shine a flashlight down the inside of the timing cover to see if the guides are still there.

Yea, I started it this morning@25 degrees. I checked the oil was not super low, so i topped it off with marvel mystery oil. Started her with a little eather( my cold start is not working) and no knock.
Yesterday was the first time i have heard that knock, it sounded like a knock, knock, knock and that was it.
I had the valve cover off, checked the timing chain which looked newish, the guides were in great shape. I did not adjust the valves, i wish i would have when I was in there.
oh yea 1988 22re
Thanks.
