im gonna buy a cold air intake kit i was gonna get the knn but i was wondering if theres a better kit than that ???

The BEST kit is what comes stock. Your truck comes from the factory with a cold air intake. And, a stock paper filter will keep more dirt out of your engine than a K&N.

Yeah I'd stick with the stock airbox. Are there any drop in filters that you could just wash with water or something? My filter is covered in dirt and I've only wheeled my 4runner 5 or 6 times.

yeah, check out autopartswarehouse.com and type in your car model and year, and it will find an airbox for you.

with all the fires down here in so cal, my filter needs changed. im gonna buy a simple k&n drop in air filter, they are good. i saw a video on youtube on how much a paper filter compares to one like k&n or the master blaster, truflow

unfortunately, truflow to my knowledge does not make a filter for the older models

AEM makes a nice dryflow filter that i would recomend way before K&N. its washable and reusable. great part

It's only a cold air intake if it pulls in air from outside of the engine compartment.

I'm probably the only one who would recommend a K&N. I've got the intake, and I like it. I got it for free with my motor, though. If you can find one for around $100, then get it. Other than that, don't shell out the $300 for a new one. It's only like 5-8 Horsepower, but also, 1MPG, and way better throttle response. Do what you want, though. I'm happy with mine.

exactly, i have yet to see a real toyota cold air. the downey and k&n sure arent. ha, the only one i have seen was custom made by someone on toyotanation, i think it was you?

I am always careful to just say "intake"....and Shoes on here has an actual custom cold air intake.

i like mine too. its been on since before i joined (may not have forked out the $180 i paid but...)

i dont recommend it for anyone who would use it primarily off-road. especially around deep water.

The OEM picks up air right behind the headlight , you can't get much better than that unless you pick it up from under the bumper or thru a scoop or snorkel
And from all the reports of the dirt that gets by K&N Filters I would definately not go there not to mention coating the controls/sensors on the later models with the filter oil is just a problem in its self as well

Trust me, it's not good. The air temp at the air box measures around 125 degrees after the truck reaches normal operating temperature. I'm not sure if that is due to heating the plastic or if you're actually pulling "warm" air in from the radiator area..

A "FIPK" type setup isn't any good either.. these measure even higher intake temps.

I've never measured a snorkle... I'd like to - if you have one and would be willing to take measurements, let me know.

The point is the air pick up with stock breather is surely better than picking up air from under the hood with one of these deck plate mods or breather in engine compartment.

i opened my scoop to help with the heat issues.

never measured the temps, but those with superchargers notice a difference with a functional scoop.

before i switched to amsoil, there was a post here showing it had better airflow than the knn, and also did a better job of filtering. i've been using it for years, clean and reoil once/year, did my own airbox mod and love both the sound and noticeable punch. (stock cam at that time, but headers+ out back).
i'll try to find that old post.

I like mine was well. And id recomend it too if you actually rev up past 3-4k, which do ALL the time, i think thats where i saw the most difference. I Also removed that plastic piece behind the headlight, now when i drive the air slaps that filter head on (hopefully, well that was my theory behind it). I bought it new (yea about 300) before i joined YT aswell, i wouldnt pay that much now, But id still get one... knowwutimean????
