code 4 problem

ok so my 86 runner has been running not so good and not getting very good milage and the check engine light has been on for a bit. so I pulled the code it was a code 4. so I go to check the thermo temp sensor and wow... the whole top of the sensor is broken off! wtf I just bought the truck from some guy a bit ago so I have no idea what happened to it. my question: I have been told that there are a few different sensors that these motors used. how do I know which one it is? because I got one from a buddy and put it in and cleared the computer by taking off the neg on the battery but I still get the code? any ideas?
