i have a 87 4runner that makes a clunking sound when turning and cant figure out what it is. i noticed the sound in 2wd sometimes when turning both ways. then in 4wd the clunking is worse and more often when turning. i cant figure out what exactly it is i have checked underneath the truck and everything seems tight. any help or suggestions is appreciated thanks.

Probably the steering stops.

 

Steering stops are greased already and how do I check the lower ball joints?

 

The steering stops only make a noise when you turn the wheel all the way left or all the way right. If that's the only time it makes the sound, you need to find some thicker grease. If it's been raining a lot or you pass through deep water, you'll need to re-apply. My truck ended up only have 2 stops (front wheels) but I've heard 4Runners have 4 so look for any contact points (shiny metal) near all the tires.

i was also thinking it may be something with the driveshaft or the u joints binding. thanks for the info

 

CV joint.check the boot on both sides,if its torn it probably is your culprit.

 

the boots are fine already looked at those

 

with the wheel off the ground, pull the wheel off and pry with a pry bar at the lower balljoint
and lower control arm to check for play.

ball joint is the most common cause.

 

with the wheel off the ground... leave the tire on for added weight and attempt to wiggle the tire by pushing at the top edge while lifting at the bottom.

easyer to see any movement at the balljoint as its easyer to see 1/4" or more movement on the tire surface 15" away from the center as opposed to 5" away from center

 

I have already jacked it up and tried to move the wheel and it didn't move at all. I called the toyota dealership for a price on the bj and I asked him what it sounded like and he said it sounds more like the ujoints.

 

if it was the u joints you will be able to grab the axle by hand and move it up and down, or side to side. plus the axle does'nt turn unless the hubs are locked.

the way i suggested checking the ball joints you will check for up and down play not just side to side like has been mentioned above.

let us know what it turns out to be, we are all just suggesting what it could be, not being able to hear the noise and not knowing all the info it's just a guessing game at best. good luck with the diagnosis.
