Just to throw something different out there, I had a really bad smoking problem a while back. Turned out that the valve from the power steering pump to the intake that ups the rpms at full wheel lock went bad, causing power steering fluid to get sucked through the intake. This caused smoking but didnt smell funny. Check you PS pump. just thought I'd chime in.

This is the answer I was looking for, the others kept me tossing and turning last night.
Nice, eh? I thought that might cheer you up.

So yeah, don't worry about it. If it were fuel, it would be black smoke...and oil would be bluish. Plus, both smell like what they are when they burn.....carbon. And as stated, a leaky headgasket would give off a coolant smell.

Just for illustration, once you've started the vehicle after it's been sitting overnight or for an extended period, look at the exhaust tailpipe. It will drip water while it's burning off the condensation. Oil and fuel burning will not have such a byproduct. The headgasket/coolant thing I'm not sure on. I've never actually been in the presence of a vehicle with a leaky hg.

My truck also smokes a bit on startup, but I have also noticed it smoking after it has been warmed up for a while. The other day I was adjusting my brakes by stopping in reverse and I really noticed it then, white smoke that smells like what I thought was burned oil.
There is no indication that anything is wrong with my HG, oil is proper color and coolant levels are good. Compression was about 170 in all cylinders in May when I bought the truck and it smoked then. I came to the conclusion that my valve guides are leaking oil to explain the smoke on startup. But if shes still smoking after shes warmed up does that mean my rings are going?

At any rate the truck runs great and I would say I dont have any power loss or anything besides the lack of balls. Just concerned to the well being of my baby.

Look again. Are you sure it doesn't have a blue hue to it? Have you looked at your plugs lately? Or even checked your compression lately?

I'm sure it did. Relief is always a nice thing.

And you're welcome.

Havent really noticed if it has a blue hue to it, I will pay more attention next time, but I think it did. I pulled the plugs and they all seemed ok, but the threads are all black. And on the first one I pulled the tip had a gray ash I could scrape away with my thumb. Wire brushed them all. I dont have the means to check compression my self.

Yeah, take another good look. I does sound like your burning oil, but not much. So, nothing to worry over immediately. Just keep an eye on the plugs, oil level, and compression.

Thanks. I figured it wasent that big of a deal, but since I never really had an interest in motors till now I dont really know all that much about these kinds of things.

Am I correct with the statement that if it smokes bafore its warmed up it is the guides, and smokes after its been running for a while it is the rings? or is it not that simple. I do use roughly a quart of oil a month and it doesent leak a drop on the ground.
