chugs when gas is LIGHTLY applied

sometimes my engine chugs when i barely touch the gas pedal. i remember reading on here something about a line being cracked or something, but i cannot find that thread. i apologize for asking this, since its been answered, but hey its irritating to not be able to find a thread, you know? what could cause the 1988 22RE to chug when gas is lightly applied? open to ANY suggestions. oh, and im going through gas like CRAZY. its drinking gas like its a big 60s V8. any ideas?

na ive had vacuum leaks before. it idles just fine, gets 130psi compression, (or it might have been 125, i cant remember exactly what he told me). but sometimes if i lightly touch the gas, the engine chugs. i remember reading a post about this issue and someone said it was prob a fuel line or something... it was a line of some sort... ill be damned if i can remember which

I have the same problem...any suggestions?

It was worse before I replaced the fuel filter and cracked spark plug wires (they were leaning against the EGR pipe)

There still is a little bit of a chug

Chugs? as in hesitates?
Id say either a fuel line leak, or bulge... any smell? A bulge would cause something similar without the tell tell signs of gas... but as the fuel pump built pressure to your engine, the line is exapaning just enough to still a little pressure.. also means at some point its gonna pop..

Well before you go an do that, take a chance to look at it yourself. Pop your head up under about where your pass seat is, that should be about where your fuel line runs down the side of your truck to your tank.. look at as much of it as you can see.. does it look rusty? It might be your fuel filter getting clogged and as you give it gas, the pump is able to brute force fuel past it.

It could also be a weak pump.

A mechanic will "hopefully" do a pressure check, plug it up and cheak the output pressure... on a 250k engine.. I hope to god its not a original fuel filter or pump, but you never know.. toyotas do run forever.
Does it crank up good? or does it lag a little?

Oops.. didnt see the above post. Depends on some things, whats your idle at? Your idle sends a specific amount of fuel, a.k.a keeps it at that rpm.. If your idle is low or rough, it just means theres that little lag as the fuel pump bumps up the pressure to your engine. Could just be that?

cant tell RPMs, no tach. . the filter behind the starter was replaced in march, the pumps are original, never been replaced as far as i know, same with the sensors, to my knowledge. the only filter left on that truck that i havent done anything to is the filter on or in the gas tank. speakin of which thanks for remindin me i gotta do a fluid system flush within the next couple weeks, about that time. yeah i know, its time for some serious upgrades on that truck.. and replacements... haha

and yeah it tends to crank up good... starts on the 2nd or 3rd crank mostly.. on certain occasion it cranks for about 10 seconds briskly until it starts. which also reminds me i need a new alternator and a starter (gonna buy from the stealership cuz ive been having really bad luck with kragen/checker and autozone lately

Then I say its fine.. I mean really.. it could be a little of everything.. the only 22r Ive worked on was my 22re on my old 91 4runner.. it never chugged.. but it was rebuilt with new everything.
It could be plugs, wires, air filter.. could be a weak pump. If it starts, runs.. and you dont want to spend forever tracking down EVERY possible thing.. I say to heck with it.

I would recommend replacing that fuel pump though.. sucks when that thing goes out on you at some place not helpful. Its not to bad of a replace, if the bolts arnt to rusted up... great way to check the rest of your fuel lines. They tend to rust up where the tank is.. the top of the tank is a lovley place for water to hang out.. not so smart tank design by toyota. Tends to be were they go out.

For your chugging problem, check your timing, and also, check your air filter. For your starter, and alternator, check with Pepboys before you shell out $600 at the stealership. I have nothing but good to say about that place, my 3.0 starter was only $100 or less(I'm not sure, but it wasn't the $350 they wanted at the dealer) I don't like Kragen(checker), and I've never been inside an Autozone.

kragen and autozone have great stuff for minor upgrades. like switches, light bulbs, stuff like that. anything major id stay away... so pepboys is the way to go huh? ok thanks man you saved me a hijacking by the dealer. though out here dealer doesnt seem too bad.. i bought a clutch switch there for 50 bucks and kragen wanted 350 for a non-brand one. ill check out pep boys tomorrow and see whats up. thanks!
