Anyone have a good source for chromoly rear axle shafts for coil sprung Second Gen 4Runners? I know the housing on these is 1/2" wider than the leaf sprung rigs. I also know the shafts are a different length but I can't find a good source for chromoly shafts for these axles.

Anyone have one?

Might have to get the custom ones from Bobby Long. Everyone else just seems to carry "generic" IFS axles which I assume are for the IFS, leaf sprung pickup axles.

Edit: Looks like the stuff on Bobby's website is all front axle shafts for 79-85 pickups and 4Runners.

 

he has front and rear ... the 79-85 is a 4 pieces set ..

scroll down it says 'custom length' long spline for e-lockers and such ..

You should still be good on stock rear shafts, and if you're not, you need to go FF, not just cromoly IMHO.

Front Range Offroad makes the kit to convert the rear to full float and it includes custom cromoly axle shafts.

This is the first I've ever heard that the 4Runner housing is wider than the truck housing. When we leaf-swapped Molly's rig, I never noticed a difference in the width.

Sorry to disappoint. They are under a 1st Gen pickup. The axle is under a 2nd Gen 4Runner. I'm thinking of putting it under the back of the truck to get a little more width.

The difference is only 1/2" WMS-WMS. But the difference in engagement would be about 1/2 centimeter per shaft. That makes me a little uncomfortable.

 

It looks like your wheels are already almost stuffed, lol..
is it a mud truck?

 

That was before any fender trimming and or axle movement. It's a rock truck with a low COG.

doesn't look like you'd get that much flex on stock-ride height.

I haven't had it out since it was on 33's.

Here's the plan ...

Front axle is moving ~2.5" forward and getting IFS hubs and a three link suspension with ORI struts.

Bed and frame behind the cab are going to disappear and be replaced by an IFS axle, tubed rear, four link suspension and ORI struts.

As it sits it has 5.29's and ARB's in both diffs, 4.7 gears in the case (I have an '81 that I'm stealing the case from for a doubler) and bone stock suspension.

I also have Trail Gear's full hydro steering setup sitting in the garage to put on when I move the front axle and do the three link.

This is my first Toyota so I'm learning a lot as I go. I've pretty much been a Jeep guy (gasp!) prior to this. Low center of gravity (COG) and minimal up-travel works very well in the rocks. If you're planning to run at high speeds, you'll want more up-travel but that can be adjusted pretty easily with air shocks or the ORI's.
