chevy swap ?

This is probebly stupid, been done before but my search foo fails today. I have the option to start collecting some stock chevy trans and transfers. Im thinking of swapping a sb or 4.3 through either a 400 or 700r4 to a 203 ft case. Has anyone done a swap with the 203 or 205 and kept it ifs? Pretty shure the case clears the torsions just not ready to chop the ifs off.

Before you guys talk about the 7.5 not holding up im not a flogger in 4w. With auto thrres usually no need to flog on it anyway.

Thanks for any info

I've read where people talked about it before, can't remember how it worked out. Why swapping in the chevy drive train? Another option would be a passenger side drop np231, lighter than a 205.

Bulletproof transfer for my purpose. Seen guys flog the cases with built bb chevy. I have history with chevy engines as well. Im already cruising into smog issues so im about to say screw it.

Thnx for the link. Got some reading for the night.

Edit: Ive also considered swaping the entire engine, trans, and front axle from a cherokee...if only it wasnt a 35 in the front of those things it would be a nice one stop shop.

What kind of HP are you planning on making? I haven't heard of anyone breaking a np241. To my first post I meant to say a np241 passenger drop from an early 90's blazer or suburban, not a np231.

Cherokees have a D30 in the front, not a 35. D30 is actually not a bad axle really. Too bad the rear axles in cherokees SUCK.

For the trans, I go with the 700-R4, just because of the low first gear. 3.06:1 in the 700-R4 vs. 2.48:1 in the Turbo 400. Plus overdrive is an added bonus.

700 r4 would be my preference. As for power. I doubt I would push more the 400 and would likly start with a stock 350. It seems my biggest enemys are the firewall, the pan, and the hood. It wouldnt be the first oil pan Ive made fit. At least I know its been done. Ill just collect as i go. Maybe ill have all the bits by the time a tow rig sits in the driveway. Thanks for the info guys

I see no need for a th400. Its overkill and will give you a worse starting gear and worse fuel mileage.

I'd just pull the running gear out of a late 1st gen Blazer or S10. Some should have the 4.3L and a 700-R4/4L60. Or if you want a V8, just pull the trans from a Blazer or S10 and get the engine out of a late 70s pickup, unless you want EFI. If you want EFI, get a 350 out of a 3rd gen Camaro/Firebird, though it'll be hard to find. Most were equipped with the horrible 305 Also, avoid early 700-R4 transmissions as they're weaker than the latter ones and avoid 4L60E transmissions since they are computer controlled, unless you want to deal with that.
