Chevy 350 Swap Questions

Hello everyone,

Looking to get a few inputs on my swap. I have a '88 Toyota pickup with a 22re 5 speed manual. I bought a '73 Chevy Pickup cheap. I'm looking to throw the 350 from the Chevy to my Yota. I have a few questions to what people have run swap parts wise, any tricks or tips you have, and what tranny and transfer case fits best (automatic). If anyone has anything for me let me know, company names for recommended parts etc.

Thanks

What tranny and t case are in your donor 73? I would just swap all the engine tranny t case if 350 th350 np205. Build new motor mounts or google search and buy some then build a t case crossmember. I ran chevy. Drivelines with toyota conversion joint at the axle but you could run toyota shafts with a conversion joint at the case. Or buy new flanges like this one takes a standard chevy joint (available at any parts store) and run the chevy shafts again.

The tranny in the truck is blown. I do plan on running a turbo 350 with a np205 though. I will also be running the chevy axles to get some width out of her.

U though about using a 700r4? U can't beat the low 1st gear ratio and overdrives a plus .the 700r4 1st gear is 3.07:1 which is 21% lower than a turbo 350s 2.52:1

I'm not really into the chevy world. This is my first gm purchase. I don't really know a lot about them unless it has a turbo 350. But I will take that into consideration.

They hold up good once you put a transgo shift kit and a corvette servo in to firm up the 1-2 shift .

You would need a different shaft to run a 700r4 to a 205 or run a spacer. The spacer is cheaper. About 2" long with longer studs. http://offroaddesign.com/catalog/700r4spacer.htm

If you must muck up a perfectly good truck and swap an SBC in (I mean that in the most light hearted of fashions, I have a vortec 350 that may yet end up in my truck) I have a few tips from the conversions I've helped with and been around.

Build your own mounts, the AA mounts are flimsy at best, and I've seen them fold up in a rig that hit the ditch

Body lift is not needed, cut the core support as needed and rebuild instead, you're already putting a ton of weight up high in the truck, don't make it even worse.

Personally, I'd adapt a TH350 to your original toyota case, and run Toyota drivelines since they're a fair bit stronger than all but the larger end of the spicer lineup.

No matter what way you go, this isn't a simple bolt in deal. If you're not very comfortable with wiring or fabrication I hope you have a buddy that is.

Thanks a lot! I am actually a welder. So fabrication is not a problem. I refuse to run a body lift and planned on making a new firewall and radiator support anyways. I will prolly end up running the chevy t-case since I am running there axles. Any issues with fitting the chevy t-case between the frame rails? I've heard a few people say its an issue. But I'll take the Toyota t-case into consideration. I'm going to have make custom driveshafts anyways. Any other tips or suggestions are welcome!

I'm running chevy t case. No issues with my frame and my 205 is clocked up some.

Okay thanks. I like how you made your cross-member as well, simple and clean.

Thanks. It's not quite done yet. I'm gonna add some tube around the bolts on the bottom and build a skid plate into it. I'll also do a few more gussets. I think I have a few more pics on my build thread.

I'm not sure if u have a suspension lift but u.might wanna look into one bc of your oil pan clearance and I would stick with a turbo 350 instead of a 700r4 there not really the bests trannys unless u put the build up kits in them but good luck looking forward to seeing the end result

Thanks, I will be sure to have a thread as I go through the spring building it. The lift will not be an issue, I'm a suspension freak. I'm gonna be doing coilovers front and rear, a custom 3 link up from and a custom 4 link in the rear . I will prolly stick with a turbo 350 just because I know more people with them laying around and ready to sell for cheap.

I'll be sure to check out your thread, as soon as I start my build this weekend I'll be starting a thread on my build.

Welcome to Yotatech! We need more info to help answer your questions. What trans and t-case do you have?

Hi newbie here again. Sorry about being so vague. It is a 1995 Toyota standard cab short bed with a 350 carbureted 350 turbo trans adapted to the stock Toyota t-case. And no speedometer hooked up. Stock speedometer is there just not working. What are my options besides a lot of tickets? Please Help? Any info much appreciated Thanks Ken

You can pick up a decent GPS cheap on eBay. I have used one as my speedo
or you can download an app on your phone too

Check this folder, you might find an answer here to get your speedo working
