Catalytic Converter Stolen! At School!!!

Well, today I went to start up my truck after my college classes and it was so loud that I got freaked and turned it off. I found out that someone had stolen my Catalytic Converter. 2 other people near me with Toyota trucks got theirs stolen too. The thing is, I don't know really what it looks like anymore.

They stole the round thing with holes on the passenger side, and the pipe before the muffler. Is this the whole setup for the Catalytic Converter? Please help, I really do not know what to do about this.

I will now keep my switchblade in my truck under the drivers seat for protection.

What will stop someone from doing this again?

What can I do to replace this? (links welcome )

Ps, I know this is like the 10,000th thread on this, but I did not really find anything helpful as far as linkage or help with the actual pipe setup.

What in the hell would you keep a switch blade under your seat for? Drive-by catalytic converter theft? You could leave a note by the cat saying:

"Dude, f you are going to steal my catalytic converter, please also break into the truck, look under the seat and locate the switch blade. Please open it and repeatedly stab yourself until you convince yourself that stealing the catalytic converter is a bad idea. Word."

Seriously though, I would ask the shop to weld the cat to the body with one of those exhaust hangers.

From: WA. The Blue Mountains are my playground.
Move out of Cali. I much prefer Washington laws. Although it's a hard to give the beaches back home in Santa Cruz. Damn I miss the ocean.

I probably wouldn't keep a switch blade in your vehicle. May want to check your states laws before you think about doing that. Hate to see you go to jail over something like that. Besides they aint goin to steal it with you in the vehicle anyways. Here in Texas as long as its not in plain view and your traveling your fine but Cali might be different.

See the thing is, I would just keep it off, but here in Cali we have to abide by those damn smog emissions tests.

Well, I just called up a couple of places here in my city, the lowest quote to get everything welded on with a new cat is $120. I guess that is not too bad, but still I really hope they do not cut it off.

I was thinking some kind of steel thing around it that they couldnt cut. What do you guys think? The guy at this shop said he gets about 10 per month...

You could do the most horrible thing to a truck possible and lower enough so they cant get under it. That sux tho, so far havnt had problems in Florida like that. People were stealing copper backflows from houses and businesses though.

I was building a house and one of the carpenters helpers was taking the copper out of the wires. We had to have the whole house rewired. Damn crackheads!

Yeah, I would warn everyone if this has never happened to you. If you can park somewhere visible if you are in a bad neighboorhood.

Not too bad to replace one, but not too good either.

Read the more recent threads about cats being stolen and you'll see some good input on cat cages and why they really won't work. The theif will just cut further up your pipes.

The good news is that aftermarket high flow cats aren;t worth anything to theives (Not enough paladium in them to make it worth while) SO write in bright letters on your cat: Aftermarket Cat, not worth stealing!

That's about the best you can do...

Hahah, Lysmachia, that's a funny idea, but maybe one worth it. Maybe I can get even a small piece of sheetmetal and wrap it around it with the letters sprayed on there with a stencil.

Do you think that these people would know the difference on what to steal or not?

Do you think this new cat will affect any sort of performance issues? Will I be better off?

They might be able to tell. Get a pupular brand name aftermarket on, like downy and make sure it says high flow somewhere. If they aren't too tweaked out on meth, they might know it isn't worth their time. Like I said you can only hope. Oh and I'd spray paint it an obvious color. But the problem with that is it might draw more attention to it.

It's a tough one...

Could you use a piece of aircraft cable to secure the cat to the frame. Thieves use a pipe cutter I believe and so long as they don't have an complete tool box, then you're probably safe.
