cargo lighting 89 4runner upgrades?

Well for weeks I couldn't figure out why the little cargo light on the drivers side rear panel wouldn't come on. This morning I turned on the head lights to come to work and *blink* the light came on. Ok so now I know it only works with the head lights on, strange. Has anyone wired that thing so it'll come on all the time? I'm thinking I can tap into a constant hot in the loom and just wire it in. I'm also wondering if any of you have installed more lights in the back end of a 4runner? I'd think that for camping you'd want another light or two for those early morning "What the hell was that noise!?" issues.

I'd like to be able to wire all this in when I do the switch-for-the-rear-window-from-inside-the-cargo-area mod, just as soon as I can find that damn thread about it.

It actually works when the running lights are on, you don't have to click it all the way to the headlights. Not sure why they make it SO complicated, but you have to have the rtunning lights on, AND the dash cargo light switch on, AND the switch on the light itself on. Why the need for 3 switches I have no idea, and to top it all off the light is barely bring enough to read by.

Thanks for the reply DC. I did some searching *gasp* and found some neat tricks over on 4crawlers page for installing LED's in that little thing and the factory deck light as well as how to wire them in to work whether the lights are on or not. I'll be doing that during the week, if I can get time, as well as wiring in another window switch. Most of this stuff looks pretty easy even for a wiring idiot like myself.

4Crawler covers all of this and how to re-wire the switch:
