Carb Question!

Okay, here's the story. i have a 1986 toyota xtra-cab 4x4 with a 22r. we have tried three carbs. (used) and on everyone of them, the float has been sky high, my toyota guy told me that he has only seen one carb off a 22r that needed the float adjusted, as odd as this sounds, he's thinking possibly fuel pump, is this possible,? because it makes no sense to me. thanks!! The truck backfires obnoxiuosly, and shoots flanmes out the tail pie when shiftig from high rpm's (3k or higher)

Why not just pop the bowl and adjust the float? Not really that hard to do. Alos, double check that the float valve is really closing the flow of fuel off. If it leaks you'll have huge problems that LOOK like a float set too high. A little squirt of Gumout everywhere in the whole carb makes a big difference too, if you have a little piece of dirt holding a valve open and permitting too much fuel into the bowl or throats. Just a couple thoughts. Hope they help...

If the fuel pump pressure is too high, it would force fuel around the needle valve seat even when the float is trying to close it. The fuel pump is probably your problem if you have tried three carburetors. Although I have never tested one, I have seen fuel pressure guages for testing them.

not familiar w/ the stock carb, but if your getting fuel all the time (high rpm's) it doesnt sound like the fuel pump. clogged fuel filter???
id check the timing after that too.
