Can't find diagnostic connector.

86 4runner 22re, trying to read code, book says the diag. connector is near the coil, not sure which connector it is, doesn't specify. Don't see any lables either.

If somone could tell me where, what shape, how many terminals, anything would be great. thankx in advance

Its right next to the coil like it says, there should be a black plastic cover on the terminal.

Mine is next to the underhood fuse box. I don't know if they changed it for the 87s but you might want to check there. It should have a cover that says "Diagnostic" but if the cover is gone it should be the only open rectangular plug around there.

I also have an 86' when i put the 87 motor in i got the diagnostic port that actually says diagnostic. On the 86 you've got two yellow plugs that just sort of hang next to the air box, there supposed to plug into little holders on the driverside fender but mine never stayed. One is bigger than the other, if i recall it's the bigger of the two that you need to jump to get codes to flash. good luck

Go ahead and take the truck to a shop and have them diagnose and correct the problem. If you don't have enough sense to search and corrrect this on your own then this is what you need to do.

Not trying to be mean only realistic. If you don't have enough sense to search this forum before asking this type of question, you REALLY need a mechanic.

PS my wife could take pictures of her fuse box, that doesnn't qualify her to work on it.

The poster probably could have searched better but sometimes no matter how much you search you can't find what you want. There've been numerous posts I've read and later can never find when I realize i need them. Or I am just a lousy searcher.

Anyway kevin, yotatech in its infinite wisdom has searched for you now that you've posted. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen past the quick reply and other stuff and you'll see the "Similar threads" heading. In the thread with "check connector" in the title 4crawler has detailed all of the check connectors and which one you need. Read that whole post as well as the link to the 4crawler site in that thread and you have your answer.

I never worked on vehicles in my life until my first yota 2+ years ago and I've managed quite well. Look at the picture above. It is the SMALLER of the two yellow connectors. Mine is 86 22re pickup. They are located by the air box like previously mentioned (driver's side). Nothing on it is labled T1 or E1. Take a paper clip or short 1 to 1-1/2 inch (I used a wire from a 84 headlight bundle with the ends exposed). Bend it in a "U" shape and set an end into each opening - there are only 2 openings in the smaller connector. Doing this will flash your check engine light whatever number of times to show you what area to look.

Do this to the plug with two wires. A paper clip will work.
