Can you remove a transfer case without removing the tranny?

My FSM and Haynes manual says that in order to remove the transfer case, the transmission must be removed. I have an 86 runner I'm putting a doubler kit on, could I just place a jack stand under the transmission and then remove the transfer? Thanks for the help.

Yes, you can do it that way. Just make sure you support the tranny well.

I just pulled one last night and just dropped crossmember and all and then separated.

Make sure you got the right kind of reduction box to match your tranny, i.e. if you have a forward shift tranny you need a forward shift reduction built (shift forks are different) and that you have the right shift forks/rails. I wasn't paying attention and just assumed what I had and ran into some junk yesterday. Nothing I can't fix but just a pain since it wasn't expected.

both cases have shifters mounted to the top, so I assume they are right... at least I hope so.

When I removed mine, it definitely didn't just pop off really easily. I had to persuade it a bit by wiggling it around and beating it with a rubber mallet. I love rubber mallets! Beat as hard as you want with no worries of damage!
