Can I replace 22RE with a 22R?

need help on this one guys...

my friends pops has a 91 22RE, the timing chain wore through the water pump housing, pissed coolant into the oil, rocked the lower end and now it knocks...

22RE's are very rare, at least by me, and thus very expensive...

I found a whole 86 toyota that rotted, but good motor, only problem is that its carb'ed

autozone calls for the same intake manifold gasket...
can i strip down the 22R and use it in the 91 truck?
thanks

yes. just pull the manifolds off your engine, and bolt them to the donor. the block and head are exactly the same, the difference is just in the manifolds.

yea, thanks for nothing...

i have been searching and i have gotten both answers...

some say yes, they are exactly the same, but others are telling me its next to impossible to make this work...

2 local mechanics have stated that they have tried this swap and could not make it work, a 17 year toyota veteran has stated it will not work, but then there are people that say switch the manifolds and move the knock sensor and it will work...

anyone have a SOLID DEFINITE answer?

Yes it will work. We are changing a 87 22r to a fuel injected (22RE) using 91 truck injection

1985-1995 head and block are all the same beast. Strip it down to the bare bones and put your stuff on it. Done.
As for the 4Runner with the 91 motor, is the engine already installed? If so, you can go through and cut and paste on the harness. The fuel injectors changed and won't plug in. If "came with a 91 motor" means it is sitting in the back of the truck, I'd say strip it down as above and just use the head and block. There isn't anything to gain from the fuel injection 87 vs 91. You don't really get any valuable change until 93(?) when they went to sequential multiport injection and then I think you'd need to swap ECUs too.
Just an opinion
