I have a lock cylinder in the tailgate of my '89 4runner that does not work with the key I use for the doors and the ignition. I am assuming that it's a non-matching replacement or it's locked up with corrosion. If it's the lock cylinder and I can't free it up what do I have to do to get a replacement lock keyed to match the rest?

I even have a couple of spare tailgates with locks, but no keys for those either

Yes, I believe this will take care of it:

First - assuming the ignition and door locks are the originals, a toyota dealership can cut you a new key (matching the originals and doors) from their VIN specific codes for about $30. From there, you would buy the new lock cylinder and even have toyota use one of their lock smiths, or find your own but give them the new cylinder and your freshly made key and the lock smith will fit it for you. I hear that's generally about $50-70 (plus toyota's mark up if you go through them.

For both the dealership making the original key and the lock smith, I would be prepared to show legal proof of ownership. I recently bought a 4runner and my bill of sale and the sellers notification to the state of WA that they sold the vehicle wasn't enough - they wouldn't work with me until my actual title came. They said it's toyota's policy in response to heavy auto theft. All that to say, bring your title and license

Buy a new lock cylinder have that keyed to fit the rest of your locks

Much cheaper then then making a key for the one you have now then keying the cylinder to fit your existing locks.

 

I saw a locksmith make a key for an older Celica in about 2 minutes, from scratch. The owner locked himself out and had no key for the smith to work with. Right in the guy's driveway with a key blank and a file the smith made a key!

I have at least one, and maybe two extra lock cylinders without keys. I'm hoping I can get one re-keyed to match my key.

 

Yes when you know what your doing it looks easy.

I have friends in the lock smith business it is interesting how much one learns.

Unless it does not matter if you need a different key for the hatch lock cylinder.

What gets expensive is making a key then keying that cylinder to match your other locks

 

Maybe I could afford to experiment and see if I can re-key it myself. I have a half dozen Toyota lock cylinders to practice on.
