I redid my own gears recently using www.gearinstalls.com as a reference for all info on installation. Your gear pattern looks far to deep in the picture above. Take a few more good pics of the pattern and email them to ZUK. He is a great guy and helped me immensely with my install. All he does is rebuild toy 3rds. See what he thinks of the pattern. Better to take the time now than to put it in and have problems in the future.

I did mess up the paint on the gears as the third was in the cab and moving around on the drive home. Got paint on my carpet
This guy is the only toyota gear setter around here and he is recomended by the local 4x4 scene. I will take some better pictures though.

Il grab some more picture soon, I was lookin at it and that Deep pattern is only on that little section. I guess he didnt wipe all the paint off when he was getting the pattern right.

The carrier can have a little bit of runout(warp within a few thousandths of an inch) that can cause the paint to read different depths in different spots. Your guy likely set it up for the best overall settings, but I only saw the pic and judged from there. You probably dont need to worry about it.

I tried to get some pictures, but its quite difficult to be honest. My mech friend will see it when we put them in, im not too worried

With as much paint that is on there you are probably looking at more than one test. It only takes 5-7 teeth to get a good pattern. Check all of them to make sure you aren't looking at the first pattern.

I got some pictures but they really didn't turn out well. Sorry guys.
BUT We installed the rear third today along with my complete amsoil syth drivetrain fluids.
We did not have a chance to do the front as we got shut down by the light. No worries as im not going wheeling for a week or two. I will do the front when I get back from vancouver island ( sat-tues).
I didn't get a chance to drive it much today, but driving it to the gas station I did notice a noticable clunk when I let off the gas ( normal correct?) when making tight corners from a stop my inside tire scrubbed along the dirt. When I took corners at higher speeds I didnt hear anything.
Is there any kind of test I can do to make sure its unlocking correctly?

i have a lockright in the rear of my auto 3.0 with 5.29s and i have never had any problems around corners as far as clunking and poping. Sometimes on a good day it will chirp around the corners and in the rain it has kicked out out of nowhere but nothing that would ever make me second guess my decision about buying it! I have an aussie upfront which does make it very interesting when in 4wd on the road

Again, is there any real way to conferm that the locker is unlocking around corners? on some corners I will hear a little clunk but no racheting sounds like I have been told there will be. I had my window down so perhaps that drowned it out. ( music was off).

i find its easier to hear my lockrite when the windows are down, it will clunk when i have to take off around a corner or if i let off/give power in the middle of a corner, mine really only ratchets when coasting really tight turns like parking lots and such.

There is a test in the back of the installation manual for the lockright...
I think it was something like jack up the axle until both tires are off the ground then rotate a tire. Both tires should spin in the same direction. Then have someone hold one tire and then spin the other and it should ratchet.
If you can't find your manual I'll look for mine later tonight for you.

I looked at the painted patterns....and although the drive side does look deep, I also realize that those are worn in gears that had developed a specific wear pattern and it has been "disturbed by putting new carrier bearings in. I don't know if the gear guy put new pinion bearings in? That can cause a couple of thou deeper in the pattern but not enough to get excited about. I wouldn't worry about the new pattern....as long as it now has some good cbpl

The best way to check the operation of the lockers is in a parking lot and make a tight turn under easy power/no power/clutch being slipped and listen for the click click click. Sometimes it might go CLUNK! KER CHUNK! CLANG!! BOOM!!!...and that is kinda normal too. It's all in the left foot action.

Autos mask the clunking and quirks of a locker a lot better. Its even in the manual that comes with the Lockrite. I'm happy with my front and rear Lockrites - they get me places I never imagined I'd try. I've never put the thing in 4wd on the road since putting in the front one tho.

I will have a good listen today, although when I was listning on my way to school my exhaust was covering everything. I could only "feel" the clunk.

The gear pattern on the rest of the teeth looked good, unfortunatly the pictures really don't do it justice. I will post them when I get home.
Im not sure if he replaced the pinion bearing. I know he had to take it all apart since my 3rd was missing the flange ( I pm'd you about that)
I did notice that the pinion had a little play in it, a tad more then my stock 4.56 one did. It drives normal, no noises or anything.
I will try the tight corner thing today on my way home. I did take a few tight corners last night but my inside tire just scrubbed along on the dirt.

Okay, well I drove home, windows down and radio off. I can hear a faint click click click click while on very tight corners. I guess she is working
