I'm all about a big complex project but it's going to be a lot cheaper if you just trade for a truck and you'll probably be a lot happier with the results

Please don't.

Also please, if you do it, don't put stacks on a Toyota.

Well, with the warm weather and all the 1st gen'rs pulling their hardtops off, I've been brainstorming, too. I've had some crazy ideas myself, just not going this far.

BUT! If you're gonna cut the back end, leave the cab open and convertible. Then, rig you up a lightweight, easily removable cage for the flatbed. Throw you a canvas top on it, put an easily removable bench seat facing backwards, and you've got your own 4wd, backwoods, beer drinking while kicking back rig.

Okay, since he's gonna share his crazy idea, I'm gonna share mine. I thought of making my own safari top for my 1st gen 86. First, a few things have to happen like building a bigger shop, getting a welder and tube bender, and learning how to weld. All of which WILL happen, damn it! But, the idea (atleast one I've "Toy'd" with) is creating a sealed unit....the safari top frame would be plumbed to the coolant system. Radiant heat for the chilly nights during Spring and Fall! Of course, have a control valve for the warmer days and turned off entirely for summer. Then, come winter the hard top goes back. Now, who's idea is crazier?

You guys just wait. I have an idea of what he's gonna do now.

He's gonna turn his 4runner into a flat deck, go to all that work to turn the front 2 seats into a regular cab by closing it off, and he'll then bolt his rear seats from his 4runner, onto the flat deck to make it the ultimate hillbilly machine.

Maybe what you could do, is add a potato gun to the flat deck somewhere behind those rear seats, and modify it to shoot beer bottles in the air. Then your rear seated occupants on the flat deck could shoot their hillbilly rifles at them there launched beer bottles.

I'll admit that I didn't read much of this thread. I just wanted to say that I have a friend that has done this.
The rear cap still comes off, and the back window still rolls down.

DUDE! BEATER! THATS ALMOST EXACTLY WHAT I HAD IN MIND! THAT LOOKS SWEETER THAN IT DID IN MY HEAD!

On the down side, I'm sad that someone's already beat me to my own idea... But I don't care, I'm still gonna do somethin like that!

Anyone have more info on a build like that?

Take that idea and where it slants at the back of the cab make it with the old runner fiberglass cover so you can use the tailgate and the window can go up and down. Would be pretty sweet.

Yeah, that's how this was done. It just looks a bit funny 'cause of the camera angle, but this is basically a 5' or 6' foot bob job.

Here's a different angle, and some more pics: http://belowdeckfabrication.com/customwork.html

Crazy Redneck.

Beater is on slickrock in that picture...or looks just like it.

I'd suggest when building your flat bed putting the tire down so as not to obscure your vision...not a fan of tires in the line of vision, thus mine stays on the trailer at camp...besides it is too damn big to lug around anyway. A tire repair kit is much lighter and smaller...and doesn't block your line of sight.

Yeah, that's Slickrock in the pic. He goes to GSMTR every year.

I haven't been since '98. I need to get down there again.

I wonder how he filled in the fiberglass cap. You say it's still removable? He had to do something for bolts to fasten to the cab. Any more info how he did this? Like Swampthing, I'd actually thought of something like this before...chopping and grafting. Only my idea incorporated the original bed and installing another tailgate inside so that it folded back. Like an Avalanche, only better 'cause it's a Yota. Actually, I'm very set on following through with my idea. The safari rack will not necessarily ever have to come off this way unless I just wanted to change out for harsher weather. Like freezing precipitation. Hmmm...I'm foaming at the mouth even though I know this idea is not original to my crafty little mind any more.

Swampthing, if you actually do this you WILL have to do a write-up with pics!!!!

Two words. I'm Doin It

After much dilberation, I'm goin after it like buck in ruttin season. And yes, I'll be makin a write-up with tons of pictures.

Now the fun part. Planning. I really like the idea of bobbing it like on the pictures Beater posted. Need to find out more about how he made it "bolt-up-able". The cuttin aint got me worried at all. Probably gonna be usin the good ol sawzall.

Like wabbit said, I don't really like anything obstructing my rear view, so I'll probably be makin it mount alot lower.

Definitely gonna be makin me a rollbar, but probably nothing like the cage on the above runner. Still want to make me a flatbed so I can put my dirtbike or 4wheeler on it.

Stack/Snorkel idea are gonna be a while down the road, but gonna leave some room for future incorperation.

So... We've gone from the should I do it stage to the lets make some plans stage! If yall got any interestin or cool ideas, throw em out! I''ve gotta narrow down this idea to something feasable!
