caliper advice needed

on both of my front calipers, the inside pad has worn down to zero percent while the outside pad has 60-70% left. i got a price from the local parts place and got a very good cost of $58 ea + core, but i would rather repair my calipers if possible. i was talking to a guy that knows much more about mechanics than I and he said it is very common for rusty pins to cause this problem and that if i just remove the surface rust on pins, i might be ok. just looking for some advice from someone else who has hopefully been there, done that. thanks.

You can try to clean all the sliding surfaces from rust, but it sounds like a pretty drastic "stick". If you have 70% vs nothing I doubt that it's just a little rust on the pins, but it might be worth it to clean it up and see if it helps. I guess you will find out quick if it is rusted solid when you pull it all apart.
Good luck.

Since the caliper mounts solid to the spindle, there are no pins to get rusty. There are 2 inside pistons and 2 outside pistons. The outside pistons must be binding to cause less wear on the pads.

prices are about the same through advanced auto...it depends on what manufacture you go with...

I had the same thing happen last year. Look at the price difference between a rebuild kit + down time rebuilding versus a rebuilt with warentee..

Yeah, you probably have some frozen pistons. You can try freeing them up before you buy new ones.

REBUILD......caliper seals and gromits 6 bucks each caliper (those pistons will free up nicely) and the pins are guide pins, they get a lot of rust and tend to bend after a few brake jobs....they are about 4 bucks per caliper (2 each)......so if you got 20 bucks and 2 hours do it

PS....the guide pins are what the pad slides on, they get bent often and cause uneven ware
