I have an '89 Uhaul box truck like this:

that I've started to build into a camper.

The head gasket on the 3zve is leaking. Now I'm at a crossroad...

-head R&R/gaskets
-junk yard engine
-rebuilt long block
-3.4L swap

I understand what each choice would involve and have some rough costs for each.

While reading some of the 3.4L swap threads I had an idea...let me know if this might be easier or even possible.

Find a donor truck with good engine/trans/cab. Swap the whole engine/trans/cab to eliminate all of the adaptations and rewiring needed.

Would this be more work than just dealing with the issues and leaving my cab in place?

3.4 swap may put you into issues with your local motor vehicle department: they generally don't like people putting engines in vehciles if the engine didn't come with it.

There may be the possibility of doing the 3.4 and making it look like a 3.0 and hope the tester doesn't catch it.

And then there's the option of being honest about putting in a newer engine, which has lower emissions..... That is a real possibility, even here in California, where I live.
