A/C & Idle-Up Problem ?
So my 87 4Runners A/C doesn't work.
When I turn it on with the truck idling, the idle does not go up and the compressor clutch doesn't engage. However, during this test, if I increase the throttle the A/C compressor engages and stays engaged (until I turn off the A/C). Even with the compressor turning, the A/C doesn't work.
It's still the original Freon and I would like to convert it to be honest. Should I just take it to an A/C shop here in Southern CA or is it something I can do with a bit of help from you guys?

You might do it yourself with several hundreds of dollars worth of equipment and some know how.
You need suitable hi-lo manifolds and gauges, a good vacuum pump, a halogen leak detector, a VOM, thermometers, ect, ect,
Take it to a shop.

Did you test the idle up VSV? Does the compressor cycle at idle? At least one of your issues may be the freon level is low. You're at least going to have to take it to a shop to have the R12 recovered and the system checked for leaks(although you can do the vacuum/pressure leak tests on your own.). Maybe they'll pay you for the R12 they pull if you convert to something else?
You can definitely do it on your own, but if you have liquid gold in there or any other refrigerant, take it to a shop first and have them evacuate it.

It's possible that the amplifier knob has been futzed with previously, but adjusting it further is not going to make it start blowing cold, not to mention the non functioning idle up VSV. Maybe that's why the knob was messed with in the first place? A non functioning idle up VSV will likely stall a 22RE at idle with the compressor running. It did on my 3VZE before I replaced it. There's other problems that should be diagnosed, especially since you can get the clutch to engage and stay engaged, but it still doesn't make the cab air cold. If you don't want to spend 30 dollars or so on a manifold gauge so you can see what's going on in your system, you may need to leave it to a shop. The cost of tools needed for the DIY work only goes up after that.
