Recently acquired a 1987 pickup (carb engine).
a/c didn't work. Jumped compressor. It worked. Air blew cold. After some exploring I found the a/c button on the interrior climate control panel (Ya known, the button labeled AC and is supposed to light up). I thought the button light was just not working but after taking some stuff apart, I found that button was not hooked up to anything. No wires nothing. Just the metal frame, black plastic housing and white poker attached to the face of the button. After more digging into the dash, I found the wires attached to what I'm guessing is the a/c button (switch) itself. I reassembled the switch/button best I could but it became obvious something is wrong. I may be missing a part but I have nothing to reference. (No pictures, nothing) Anyone familiar with these buttons? There is no way this creates a circuit the way I have it assembled. Maybe a piece is missing.

I'm considering replacing the button with an aftermarket button or even a toggle/rocker switch but wanted advice and opinions on that idea. I'm not sure how to wire that up. There are three wires to hook up the a/c button (black, white, blue). The wiring diagram was no help to these unskilled eyes.

You have the wiring diagram? That would be at least as useful as photos of your fingers.

My EWD is for a '94, and it looks like this is one of those cases where the wire colors are not the same. Your photo shows a B-W, L-W, and probably W-B (though it is hard to make out the third in your photo). You do not have Black, White or Blue.

But there is only so much an A/C switch can do. I'll guess one wire (probably the B-W) is to ground, one to the heater relay then to +12v, and the third to the equivalent to the A/C Amplifier, so that it starts the A/C system with 12v to that line. So get out your multimeter, turn on the fan (to close the heater relay), and find which one has 12v to ground. A test light from that wire should find you the ground (but be alert; the A/C amplifier might pull enough current to light the test light too).

I dunno, I’d probably just get a used Toyota switch off eBay.

It looks like the switch changed in 1989, so for a replacement you'll be looking for one >32 years old.
