A/C switch?

Basic '91 pick-up I just bought. The A/C button is missing. Is there a way to test whether or not the A/C actually works? The button itself is expensive to replace and I'd hate to do it if the rest of the system has a flaw. It is charged with compressed freon (or whatever goes in there). Anyone have the button for sale or know where to get one cheap? Thanks.

Wow, thanks (yea, this is a great site!). How do I go about getting ahold of you? I'm in Marin county California. I could pick it up if your around here or I could send you a box to ship it off in. I think UPS has some means of shipping like that.
Thanks again.
