Buying a 1st Gen Runner Need Advice
Hey folks I am going back full cirle here, I wanted a removable top 4Runner and found an 86 22RETurbo Runner with Auto Trans.
I drove it, it is a little bit of a dog but it has 220K on the ODO. There is Zero Rust I mean Zero Rust and the seats are in great condition. This will be a project truck, my 6th Toyota just want to know if this is a good setup...I want to SAS it and probably rebuild the mtor and turbo seals when it dies..
Give me your opinions please,,,,this is the 10th !st gen I look at and this thing is in really realy good condition for its age...I have seen way too many rust buckets...
What do I need to look out for?

If it's a dog the turbo probably isnt boosting, and with that many miles, it'll need a new turbo.
IF it's mint, i'd get a new turbo, intercool it, get a valvebody for the tranny, (from IPT) and give it about 8-9psi and call it good.... it'll be waaaay faster....

my 4runner is an automatic nonturbo 22re and i used to hate it but i have gotten used to it. Its kinda a dog sometimes but i love the torque for offroad and when the engine is running the way it should (im having some hesitation issues right now) it can be pretty peppy and i have roasted the tires a few times.

Its no good - send it to me
Id get it for the body and stuff - and swap the trans to a manual - but thats just me..
MANUAL Gen1 4Runners with a Turbo are kinda rare - Im not sure they ever existed that way from the factory...
There is a 22RTE mailing list
Also Jeff Moskvitz (sp) site is good info

A buddy of mine had one, 22ret auto 4runner. It was slow to say the least. Motor eventually blew up, but I have a feeling it was his fault. Good thing about the turbo 4runners is that they have the v6 diff (it's stronger) and some other upgrades stuff. If you like autos (I don't) get it and rebuild or upgrade the turbo. Do some searching, theres gota be a few people that have upgraded the turbo on those things.

Ok I am on my way to the DMV to transfer title on this 4Runner. I am a bit weirded out about the Turbo but I will eventually swap in a 22RE or something else downn the line...for time being...can I do the Seafoam treatment on the 22RTE?? Just wanna know if I will FUBAR it before I try it.
Keep the hints and tricks coming for this Turbo Runner....Pics to follow...

a good friend of mine has an 87 runner RTE & he was telling me there are all kinds of upgrades out there. LC engineering is a start....
He said Garrett offers a larger turbo that's a stock replacement & gives more boost. Also intercooling it will help dramatically I guess. I think you have to get creative here though & find parts from other cars & what not.
Oh, & be aware that the stock turbo manifolds are prone to cracking I guess. I believe his was...
Jsut do some searching & you'll gather alot of info...
Inchworm also has a doubler for these now...so you'll be able to crawl with the best of 'em now!
All in all for $1500, I'd say that was a good deal! What other options did it have?

It has the digital dash..everything works in it....only thing I might do is swap the door panels...I am saving the clams to get a canback type cover....
I might lose the doors when the top comes off and put some tubes on......My 93 runner was a piece of junk compared to this diamond in the rough

The Ct20 Turbo Is Prolly Toast, good Luck Finding One I Bet If Its The Orginal Turbo Its Prolly Cracked. Most People Here Go With A Ct26 Or A Garett T3 Im Sure Darin Will Look At This Post And Offer His Opinon, He Is I Think The Best Person To Ask About Turbo Stuff Here On Yota Tec. I Got My Kit From Tec Turbos,it Was Just Pulled Off The Truck And Sent Back Because It Only Had 1000 Miles On The Rebuild And It Has Exsessive Shaft Play ,so Right Now My Truck Is Down, Tom

Get an IPT valvebody for your auto tranny, and it will be awesome, you can tell them how fast and how hard you want it to shift, so it will shift like manual truck (or even faster)... here is a 3.4 supercharged on a dyno with the valvebody mod... watch how fast it shifts... http://www.gadgetonline.com/mvc-001v.mpg

put some money aside for a new starter ALT, O2 sensor , ect ect.
I now know buying high mileage trucks plan to replace these kind of things if they have not been replaced.
