So I started changing parts today on my new to me 4runner and I screwed up. I managed to bust off one of the bolts on the front diff taking the cv axle off. Instead of getting overly pissed off, (what usually happens) I just left it and finished up changing the lower ball joints and taking the cv axle out. Sense its been raining after about 5minutes of starting, I just packed up and came inside. I took a quick search around to see if there was a easy way to get them off, but I haven't found anything yet. Anyone have any hints? I don't just want to beat on it and chance warping something. It doesn't look like I can get a puller in there either.

I wonder if the dealer will sell me just one of those.....

 

Vicegrips and some WD40?
If you leave the CV out you can have the first 3wd Yota!!

 

ha the wheel is actually back on the thing, so if the need would be there I could actually run it like that. I some how cant see it going far with the open diff in the front.

Vicegrips? are they threaded in? They look like they are on the truck, but from the images on the manuals I have it looks like a pressed in stud.

The head of it is still there, It just broke off right at the nut. so if its threaded I could probably just put the heat to it and see if I can unscrew it.

 

Oh. Sorry, I thought they were studs not bolts. still, personally what I would do is take my vicegrips and just twist the shyza out of it. It could damage the flange though, so maybe not such a good idea. hm. can you take the flange off and maybe get it pressed out? what happened to the other bolts? I know there are more than one...

I take them all out with a long punch and BFH. I use bolts for reassembly, makes it much easier to change an axle. They look like bolts, but they are pressed in like a lug stud.

 

Naw braw, Yours is only 3 wheel...his would have been 3 wheel drive!!
btw, what kind of wheels are those? I have the same, they came with the truck and I've always wondered what kind they were...

I'm going to go out in abit and try and beat the old one off. Not in a big rush anymore as I called the dealer and they'll only have the stud in for me on Wednesday. How crappy is that? there goes my weekend run. debating now if I should just go get a bolt that size and run it like that till the part comes in. I don't think that would be to good for balancing, but I think it would be better then running it without the bolt, or without the axle in there.

 

Beat it out then put a bolt in. Lots of people do that to make the CV changeout easier. You should not notice anything as far as balancing goes. If you're worried, beat out the opposite stud as well, and replace it with a bolt also... Instant balancing.

 

yea hes right. when i change cvs i dont even take my wheels off. i unbolt the 6 bolts and beat atleast 4 of the studs out with a brass hammer. i wouldnt be to worried about running it with 5 bolts for a few days....

 

Well I got it all back together, minus that one bolt, I'm just going to leave it out till I get the new one, I don't plan on doing any highway driving or offroading sadly for the next few days, so I can't see it hurting it. It wasn't hard to take out either, few taps with a hammer and it just popped out. Its alot easier to work on stuff when its not dark and raining.

I just took it for a run to the gas station, and it rides the same as it did before I took it apart, so I'm sure it will be fine till Wednesday.

Do yourself a huge favour, and grind the little splines off so you have a bolt as opposed to a stud. Makes CV axle removal easier.

 

Sadly all you would have is 2wd, as the diff would just send the power to the side with the least resistance i.e. the side with no CV.

 

I'm aware of that...it was just a joke...
