Yes. Gotta love open differentials, the torque follows the path of least resistance. If your hub is busted, it will just go to the broken hub.

OK heres the news. Both hubs are shot and a broken driver side axle broken off in hub. Thanks for all the insight. Now I'm on the parts hunt.

what do you mean by the hubs are shot? Are the gears stripped or something?

Should you be able to turn the part were the axle come thru when its in free. I stuck my newly aquired nub of an axle in there and couldn't turn it.

You broke two Aisin hubs?!!! Those are the most durable hub made. Was it lack of maintenance or what. What exactly happened to cause that kind of a break? If you sheared off an axle like that, check the diff still turns smoothly. You may want to open up the diff and take a look inside to see if anything else broke as that's a lot of torsional force released all at once.

My guess is that the hubs are still rebuildable. I need pictures of this axle/hub carnage, this is going to be good.

Also, for next time, tugging in reverse technically isn't the best idea as the diff gear teeth have less strength this way. Not sure if this is the weakest link though- maybe on the rear end, but the CVs are the weak link on the front.

Maybe the hubs are ok, remember I'm new to the 4x4 thing. Neither hub is stripped out or anything, pass. side is dry and needs lubed and the spring was depressed when I took it apart. driver side where axle broke is nice and lubed and the spring was sticking out with gear on the end, pass. side was not like that I had to tap out the gear.

DId you possibly break the outer portion of the CV axle? The part the guy is holding below (note: from a different model year than our trucks).

I've read elsewhere that the stub is prone to breaking under sudden / shock stresses- that it's the weakest part of a stock IFS setup.

I didn't know that. I had always thought it was the outer CVJ. I've never broken a CV though.

The axle broke where the spline gears are. Also should I be able to turn the(with my broken axle part) when the huds are unlocked?

The cv axle should be able to be spun easly by hand with the hubs unlocked.

Update: I replaced the axle today. In doing so I removed the sway bar to. We took it out today to a local spot and all is good again. I'm glad I removed the sway as the thruck is much smooth in transition and flexes alot better.
Thanks for all the help and advice, I'm glad to be wheel'n again.
