brake pads heads up

I don't know if anyone else had this problem but on my 89 4 runner built in Dec 1988 the brakes are from a 1988 model, don't think or know if they have been changed at all but I suspect they were still using 88 model calipers off the shelf until they switched,i found this out the hard way after buying 89 model pads that were bigger than the 88 model that matched.Any one else have issues with their 89's?

i think that's a V6 vs 4 cylinder issue, not a year thing. V6 trucks/4runners had larger brake calipers.

Parts are catalogued by model year, not by the year the truck was made in. If it's an '89 truck, the brakes will need to be '89 brakes.

The above poster sounds like he hit the nail on the head. Sounds like they gave you the wrong parts.

I have the same issue from time to time on my pre-tacoma 95. Sometimes I have to ask for parts from a '94 to get the right one. Most auto dealers consider 95 trucks to all be tacoma's.

I have an 88 and a 89 both 22RE's. The 89's are different calipers, bigger and only 2 pistons. The 88's are small and have 3 pistons.

When I had my brakes done on my 87 they told me that it had bigger brakes and that the calipers and pads that the 87 called for were too small.

The calipers are interchangable. I have one big and one small on my 89 right now :pat: . They gave you the wrong pads. I think all the new body style (89 and up?) have the big pads with the 2 piston calipers reguardless of the engine.
