BJ Spacer Question
#22
Yes. The ZX****** "item" numbers don't mean anything to anyone other than JC Whitney.
Nothing fishy, you just need to find out the corresponding Rough Country "part" numbers.

Longer front shocks for your 1.5" - 2.5" lift:
1985-1996 Suzuki Samari,
Upper Mount:Stem 3/8" x 16
Lower Mount:Loop Type 5/8" x 1 5/16"
Compressed Length:9.625"
Extended length:15.375"
Travel Length:5.750"
Gabriel Pro Guard p.n. 61549 ($21.99@autozone) or Monroe p.n. 59002 ($16.99@checker)
I liked the Gabriels much better.

Ok, I spoke with Rough Country. They make a shock with compatible mounts that is 9.3/14.7" P/N 9142. A 13.94" long shock needs about .5" of shimming to work so this shock will fit, just with little room to spare.
This shock fits this...
1987 - 1993 Mazda 4WD Pickup 0 - 1" - - 9142
There is no 8000 series equivalent.
The 12.4" collapsed 20" extended length of 9138 is the correct shock for a 4" bracket style lift.

No, they sent you shocks for a 4" bracket style lift. That lift increases the available collapsed length by 4". Note the Rough Country recommends your shock for a 2-3" lift AND a 4-5" lift. There is no 2-3" lift in existence for our trucks. Models vary but your shock's collapsed length is about 3" longer than a stock shock.
JCWhitney doesn't know jack about modifying an early model Toyota 4X4. They sell you pretty much what you ask for. They expect you to know what will work and what won't. That is a risk when dealing with a general store type of place and why I often avoid them even when their price might be better.
When dealing with aftermarket vehicle specific mods, places like but not limited to www.4crawler.com, www.toyteclifts.com, www.trdparts4u.com, are indispensable. They know OUR trucks and can tell exactly what will work. 4Wheelparts might carry a lot of stuff, but unless you get lucky enough to speak with someone who knows Toyotas, they are no better.
You will destroy these shocks very shortly so if they are still functional, I suggest you remove them immediately and see if they will take them back.
The shock that Rough Country makes which could work on our trucks with a 1.5" lift is the 9142. This just happens to be the model Rough Country and a place like JC Whitney would suggest for a Mazda 4X4 truck. It's like the Rancho listed on our site, it's suggested for a Suzuki Samurai with a 2" lift.
If you are planning on installing spacers, I would suggest buying the spacers/shocks, etc... as a kit from one of the vendors I listed and be done with it. It will take all the hassle and worry out of the purchase.

Man, I really got screwed in this situation. I'll try and return them, but I doubt that they'd take them back. I'll go with Pro-Comp shocks from Summit; I saw that on 4crawler they provide part #s for procomps, and those part numbers match with the ones from summit. Hope this works!

Summit only sells the 314014, which is a procomp shock for a 1 inch lift; however they dont sell the corresponding rear shock for a 1 inch lift, they only sell a shock for a 2 to 3 inch lift (for the rear). If i plan on getting an add-a-leaf kit, will this shock be ok?

Guys, may I make a suggestion or two. If you want to purchase shocks on your own, go to www.sdori.com and order one of the shocks on the list. They will work for the front. There are lots of options for rear shocks, the rear axle application is less sensitive to length variation. Or, just go to the vendors I listed and they will take care of you. Tell them what you want to do with your truck and they won't steer you wrong. They have earned good reputations through their good service and thorough knowledge. I know what I have ran but they typically have experience with a wider range of products. I ask them when I want to know about a part I have not tried.
Sometimes too, you get a better deal when you order all the shocks, etc... together from one place.

i am getting ready to order some of the BJ spacers for 4Crawler for my 91 pick-up. i also planned on ordering some extended shackles to level to truck back out. right know it sits just a hair high in the rear on what i think is stock suspension settings but hard to tell. i am wondering what length i should get?
#35
The way it works with shackles is you get half of the length of the shackle for lift. A 3" shackle will give you 1.5" of lift. Without pics or measurements it's hard to really suggest a correct shackle, however, I'd keep in mind the rear end will settle when loaded with wheeling gear when selecting a shackle.

hey frank thanks for making bj spacers! I got them about 6 months ago and love em...probably the most value for a lift you can get, way better than a 1 inch body lift, and for me better than a bracket lift.
hope everyone on here finds the right shocks, i went with the OME's and they are wicked. trdpartsforyou.com has wicked sales on them with the spacers, saves ya all the hassle.
