Greetings from Canada.
I'm an oldschool Toyota car guy, so raiding the junk yard is nothing new to me. I didn't waste any time when I got my '91 4cyl 4x4...
4Runner Sport parts:
- front seats (swapped interior from a second pass seat to make the driver's rip free)
- center console/armrest assembly (three levels of storage)
- leather steering wheel
- small pocket that sits in front of shifter assembly, under pull-out tray
Other random finds from 4Runners/Trucks:
- locking glovebox (re-coded cylinder)
- 4.56 front and rear diffs (looooooow mileage too!)
- canopy/camper shell/cap/topper/whatever for only $90 (still sold new for over $1000!)
- windshield
- door panel pockets
- map light assembly
- blue "ball" OEM shiftknob from early 80's Corolla
Still to come:
- A-pillar grab handles, and driver's side roof grab handle
- side steps....long shot for sure
Love the junk yard

Scored a leather wrapped steering wheel out of a 1st gen 4runner and a new(to me) clutch start cancel switch. I wanted a rear diff too, but the guy wanted $200 for just the third

Free stuff from a 88 4cyl pickup we scrapped at work:
Factory front skid, 2nd front tow hook, Asian manuel front hubs, Spare front calipers, spare front cv shafts with 0 binds and perfect boots. E-fan from a Taurus was also a free one from a car getting scrapped at work
Only J/Y "upgrades" were the Land Cruiser coils, the visor(if you wanna call that an upgrade), and the Eagle 15x8 wheels were one of the spare sets for my Pathfinder that were a free swap for a set of junk steel wheels, everything else was needed to make it run or spare parts (I have a good stockpile of rear window switches and in dash cupholders...)

How much time have you spent working on your rig?
Will you ever see that value again if it was written off.
It's out of pure enjoyment.
I like taking stuff apart at pick and pull. It helps me learn how to do it without any real consequences if I mess up. Then I go do it properly on my truck.
It takes me 1/2 hour to pull a rear diff, an hour to get the front out. At $90/ hr, it's still cheaper to pull your own diffs.

On another note, I also found a supercharged 3.4 in the same yard. It was only missing the throttle body, but the engine itself had 208,000 miles. Now I just have to convince the owner that I just want the "upper intake" off of that engine

You don't have to spend a lot of money to get quality parts
The guy running the junk yard doesn't exactly monitor how the vehicle is driven during it's lifetime before it ends up in the yard so that he can justify inflated prices. Just because he charges more, doesn't mean it's a part in "good condition". Nobody can tell you that. The only truth comes from a visual inspection.
I got both my 4.56 diffs at Pick 'n Pull for about $80 each. Super low mileage too. I'm loving life

I guess my biggest steal was a 3.4 engine with full loom, ecu, all underhood electrical parts including cruise, fuse boxes, ignitor etc, security system, body harness, exhaust, oxygen sensors all for $850 including tax.
I've since grabbed a bunch of small stuff cheaper than I should have. Radio plus cd player for $10, Fuel tank filler neck $20, complete hitch and wiring $25, 3rd row jump seat $25, full set or rear seat belts $30, heater controls $22, full rear bumper including brackets - rust and dent free $50, front windshield chrome trim $0, various connectors including OBDII from another vehicle $0, front pass factory speaker $0.

$100 got me;
V6 brake booster
1st gen top, with perfect headliner
Factory roll bar cover
SR5 interior panels
Visors
Various misc. parts (map light covers, etc)
Local guy was parting out his '88.
Around here, when a Toyota gets taken to a junkyard, it's stripped clean in just a few days.
it's hard to find used parts where I live
