Looking to throw on a catback exhaust on my 1989 toyota 22re 4x4 here soon. I have the DLX model I believe... Is there a system that stands above the rest? Also what should I be looking for as I shop?

I would recommend just going to your local muffler shops and getting some quotes. Per the recommendations here on the forums (you can search for them) I got a Magnaflow since it's a high-flow muffler. I'm not sure about the 22RE but the 3VZ-E is starved for air so more exhaust leaving faster = better MPG and HP. I also went up 1/4" from 2" to 2 1/4" (might be different on 22RE). All that done and professionally installed for $275. They also welded my cat on, preventing theft.

If you are set on doing it yourself, buy the muffler separately. If you end up with a stock or worse muffler you're not going to notice much of a difference except for shiny pipes instead of rusted ones.

Don't waste your money on anything name brand unless you are a brand whore.

Run 2 inch from exhaust manifold to muffler, and 2 1/4 from muffler to tip. Make sure your new muffler has internal diameter of 2 inches. Idea is to remove bottlenecks. Muffler brand is personal preference. I use a stock style cause I don't like the sound if bumblebees in an aluminum can.

If you don't have emissions, you can eliminate the cat. It would also be a good time to replace your o2 since it plays a major role in how well our trucks run. Buy a denso direct fit. Nothing else.

All in all, you should have less than $300 for the perfect 22re system installed.

I went with Thorey tri y header, 2 1/2" pipe with a 2 1/2flowmaster 50 series and a catco cat. Its time to redo everything after a bunch of non engine realted mods and i'm doing 2 1/4 this time with a stainless 50 series a resanator and no cat. Imho 2 1/4 the biggest you should go unless you have a built 22re or a turbo. Go to a muffler shop and have them make something that tucks up close to the under side of the truck and have the tail pipe exit in front of the rear shackel if you wheel hard. I got the Magnaflow because it isn't loud (I'm not one for a roaring truck either) and it really improves performance for the 3VZ-E. Putting a stock muffler wouldn't have done much at all. Once again, not sure if that's the same for a 22RE.

Going to go get some quotes here later this week, I was quoted at "around $240" to do header all the way back at one place, while the other shop in town is having me swing by to get a better idea of what they would be working with. Both shops have a really good reputation in my area so I'm not super worried about getting a low quality job done.

If your looking at a catback exhaust ideas I went with 2.25" piping with Magnaflow magna pack muffler and high flow cat for less than $200 including piping. I went with magnaflow because of the smooth sound it produces rather than the raspy sound of the flowmaster or cheery bombs. Good Luck!

I'm assuming you did all the work yourself, right? Even the bending of the pipe and whatnot?

I had a local Les Schwab do the bending, the welding and the rest of the work I did in my front yard. with all the running around it took a couple hours to do, nothing to it.

I did a dump style over the Axel so I had them do two bends and they didn't charge me a dime which is the kind of customer service Mr. Schwab founded his company on.

Where did you get your pipe and what size did you use throughout?

The pipe I bought from Napa and like I said i did 2.25" piping, cat, and 2.25" muffler with a 2" core. So basically 2.25" system.
