When I did my wheel bearings, I went to a sporting goods store and bought a spring scale that is meant to weigh fish. If I remember correctly, it was less than $10. I would do it that way to make sure.

actually i thought of that after i wrote this, went and bought it. with the adjusting nut off its pulling 8lbs. i ran out of light, time and energy to do anything else. I think i may have popped the rear oil seal in to tight on the inner bearing

Just try it at 18 lb and see what you get for pulling force on the spring. Should be roughly between 6 and 12 lb. If you're still there, you're fine.

trust me on this one i just did my wheelbearings 3 weeks ago. i tighned the nut to 18 ft lbs after tightening to 43 lbs and spinning the wheel 3-4 times. 18 ft lbs is way to tight. yes the manual says that, i drove down the road and they started smoking. u cant put to much grease in there. pack the bearings full of grease. tighten the first 54 mm nut to 43lbs to get them pressed in good then back nut off and only about 1/8 of a turn past finger tight. then put the little ring on and bend a tab over that will keep the nut from ever moving. then tighten the 2nd nut on to what ever the manual says good and tight somewhere 36 lbs i think. double check that 2nd nut tourqe specs

...and that's exactly why you're supposed to check your preload when you're all done. 6 to 12 lb on a fish scale pulling on one of the wheel lugs at a 90 degree angle is what you're looking for. 18 ft-lb of torque on the adjuster nut is just a ballpark figure to get you started.
