Talking Barely passed smog today

I know this 1st gen would never have passed smog when I first got it. The seller was really sketch about it, "I'll get you resmogged if this certificate doesn't work..."

After some work - headers, new cat, Seafoam, new plugs, wires, rotor, dist cap, etc.. here are my results:

..............15 mph.....................25 mph

%CO2.....14.7..........................14.7
%O2.......0.0............................0.1

HC(PPM)..130...........................74

CO(%)....0.27...........................0.15

NO(PPM)...98...........................88

So my cat is running awesome considering the max allowance for NO is 1085 and 1120. I'm a bit concerned about the hydrocarbon level though. Max at 15 mph is 131 so I BARELY eeked through with 130.

Anyone know what could possibly be wrong?

Mine barely passed as well. Something about the timing. It failied the first time my brother smogged it 2 years ago. I did mine on 4/8. I'm just glad it passed.

Mine Results are similiar. I had the LC header, Magnaflow cat, Flowmaster and 02 Sensor done right before I went.

................co2......%02.....HC......CO%...... .NO(PPM)

15mph-----14.2-----.9----115----.02------787 Max(1085)
25mph-----14.1----1.1-----67----.01-----1035 Max(1120)

you might want to look at your egr valve assy, mine was damaged and caused similar readings. once replaced and rechecked, the levels came down dramatically.

I bought mine from a guy that lives were no DEQ is required, the cat was hollowed out. But just to see what was up I took it though. It blew 858 hc, through on a new cat 248 hc, limit here is 220 I think, so it still missed it. It idled ruff still after some testing I found the EGR was bad. Replaced it and it blew 10 hc.

22r carbed.

Kind of confused... Whats the point to just smog new cars? Arent the new ones more efficient and clean?

Tacoma Dude and pinnacle, they dont test by RPM down there? Let me go look for my results when I sold my truck.

Mine has the speed then the rpm next to it. They test it at 15 and 25 mph.

15mph - 1811 rpm
25mph - 1906 rpm

Interesting... I cant find NO(PPM) tests on any of the tests! Different counties different tests?

Smog results from 4/15/2005
RPM...........co2......%02.....HC......CO%.......N O(PPM)
886-------12.0-----4.1-----61----.00
2509------13.4-----2.2-----30----.02

Smog results from 4/10/2006
RPM............co2......%02......HC......CO%...... .NO(PPM)
1009-------13.1-----2.9-----55----.00
2629-------13.3-----1.8----139----.67

I barley drove the truck in the past year... maybe less than 300 miles...
Also noticed mine are Idle Emission Tests, when you guys put actual MPH on does that mean they have the rear tires moving?

Yeah, they put mine on a dynamometer.

I dont currently have to do emissions, but when I used to they wouldnt do the speed one with 4wd rigs, only rpms. Saftey issue I guess...

They are pretty sticky out here in Oregon, at least in the bigger cities. The only vehicle I know of that do not have to test are 1975 and older, and diesels. 2wd and 4wd vehicles all have to test on dynos, but fulltime AWD vehicles obviously can not because of the one set of rollers on the dyno. But they do have to idle test. And everyone that has to test has to be under a certain decibal level. I think it is 110db.

Milton, I'll have to check my certificate when I get home.

As for the actual smogging... I'm all for it. Not to sound preachy but if clean air (or anything like that, ex. crime prevention) is going to start somewhere it's going to start with me. I've been to Korea and seen first hand the affects of that acid rain. If the testing is to prevent that then I'm all over it.

All about personal responsibility but you know some people don't care for that kind of thing so what can you do?

________________

I'll have to look into the EGR. Thanks for the info so far...

Bobakazi - I didn't know they tested for sound too?
I'd definitely fail - I have a Flowmaster underneath and I never knew just how loud it was until I took the top off for more than 10 minutes just this past month. WOW!

My 95 runner was so stinkin loud with my flow and header I added a 12" glasspack..

I went with a 60 series flow this time, well see how loud it is.

I will probally have to do my first emissions test on my 92 this winter, hope the new exhaust and cat will help out.

Before I put my cat on, I had a Flowmaster 40 and it ran 111db at 3000 rpms. I could set off car alarms as I drove by. Is was not that loud in the cab, but with the windows down going through a drivethru, it was awful. One time I had a few friends in the bed, and they asked if I was trying to compete with airplanes. I bought it that way, and am much happier now with the cat. I do not like to pollute any more than necessary either, Tacoma Dude. Of course I failed miserably w/o a cat, but I thought I would try. It is free if you fail. But I passed with flying colors with the cat.

Oh yeah... before anyone gets offended - the comments I made wasn't aimed at anyone specifically but in general to those idjits that think they are the one exception to running without a cat or something like that just because they think it boosts their performance.

On my 95 I too could set of car alarms, and when I ran swapers my buddies thought they were in a cessna, swamper humm and flowmaster roar

My cat broke apart one day, so I had to hollow it out. Which got really noisy, but not at the tail pipe as much as at the cat, it was so thin wall it didnt stop much noise.

When I put my header and flowmaster on, without a cat, I found a shop that did the whole custom exhaust with no cat, then it was loud. I just didnt have the cash at the time for a cat, the header was NIB, but free, and the flowmaster and exhaust were all I could afford. Then when it was too loud a 12" glasspack was 1/2 the price of a cat.

Anyways too my point, I hated not having a cat. The noise, the smell, I wont do it again. And I dont think there was any performance gain from removing it.

I'm glad we're all in agreement

Okay so I have my certificate here. They did run the rear wheels (after checking with me that it was on 2 hi) but not for very long. After that they revved at neutral.

15 mph....1662 RPM
25 mph....1774 RPM
