Ok heres the deal, I recently installed a used 3VZE into my 89 pickup. (Sucked up some water on the old motor and locked it up.) Got everything switched out and what not got the motor in the truck. And now it is sputtering and spitting and wont idle for longer then 10 or so seconds. It is throwing a IAT code and o2 conde (o2 is not hooked up at the moment). I can make it stay running but it spits and sputters and wont rev past 1200 rpms or so. At first I thought timing but have checked and double checked that and firing order too. Is it possible that the water that I sucked up caused the AFM to go bad?


I am so tired of messing with the truck. I might just be selling the damn thing......

 

possibly fried some electronics inside. all i can think of. or that you just picked up a bad engine. who knows

sounds like its your problem. since it wont go past certain rpms

 

I thought yotas were called AFM's. Oh well, lets hope thats what it is. The guy I bought the motor from ("govt mule" on here) is sending me one (the one that came with the 3vze in my truck now) so when I get it and install it maybe it will work. FINGERS CROSSED!

 

You need to have the 02 sensor hooked up for the engine to run right.

 

You didnt try to take the AFM apart did you?

 

yea i tried but all I really did was tear it up.

 

There is a wire clip holding the harness onto the plug. Pull that back and the harness comes right off. If you pull the screw's and yank, it pulls the wires off of the board. Do you have a pic of it? Its very possible you could have a junk AFM now unless you are good with a soldering iron

 

Yea i am decent with a soldering Iron. But I am getting another AFM in a few days so I am just gonna wait on it to get here. I dont have any pics.

 

I am also interested to see if this fixes your problem. I have a 90 SR5 with the 3.0 and it wont rev past about 2500 rpm and is hard to start cold. I checked the AFM per the repair manuels, and fuel pressure is fine.

 

As soon as it gets here and I install it I will let you guys know.

 

well I installed the new (used) AFM and it did not help! so I triple checked the ignition timing.....well the damn dist. was off by a few teeth I suppose. Realigned everything again and the damn thing is running good now.

But the truck is still going to be up for sale...( dont like the 3vze)

 

So my rigs broke down right now, waiting on me to install the new fuel pump. After working all afternoon, trying to find an electrical problem in the fuel system, I became irritated/bored, and decided to take a peak at the AFM as I had some about it in another thread causing fuel delivery problems. I did exactly what was mentioned earlier, not to do. So to make a long story short, can anyone guide me to some schematics of the AFM for a 3vze, as I believe I need to do some soldiering. Perhaps anyone with some helpful instructions? I’d really appreciate it. -thanks

 

Check your toyota service manual...all the schematics are in there...

Well I guess the yota gods were smiling upon me. I got my fuel pump, trucks running good with no check engine light so I'm assuming my AFM is a o.k. Thanks though dirtoy. I'll keep you in mind just in case. What are some signs to look for in case someone did have a bad AFM?

 

Just wanted to let you know, I replaced the fuel pump & strainer. As well as the fuel pump damper for good measure. I had forgotten how peppy the 3zve V-6 was. Runs like a champ.
