i have a automatic transmission on my '91 v6. my tranny was slipping in reverse at first and then started slipping in drive. i dropped the pan and changed the fluid, checked the solenoids, and replaced the filter. the filter was completely clogged and all the solenoids are good. there was a little bit of metal on the magnets in the pan but it wasn't excessive. i put the pan back on and it ran great... for about 2-3 days. now it wont shift out of 1st gear and is starting to slip again.

 

you might try a trans additive called trans medic, if it doesn't help in a 100 miles it probley not going to work. if the old fluid was burnt smelling and a dark color it probley won't help.

hmmm...sounds like your torque converter is slipping. Have you ever done any work in that region or checked it before?

 

no, how do you check it? the guy i bought it from said the tranny had been rebuilt. i have only had the truck for about 8 month. would the torque converter be clogging my filter? i also just rebuilt the top end of my engine....if that makes a difference.

 

Ha, well it wouldn't be clogging your filter lol its sort of a "clutch" if you will for automatic transmissions (simplified explanation). It is located within the bell housing and is rather hard to get to, you would know if you have worked on it before.

Can you shift your transmission manually? Does it make a whining noise?

 

i havent worked on it before. im not sure, i will test it tomorrow. my dad was driving it to work and usually it will rev to about 5000 rpms and then shift from 1st to second, but my dad said this time it did that but it woudnt even shift out of 1st gear. wat would make the filter clogged? it was completely covered with a film of sludge.

 

Well, the reason that I say torque converter is because it literally puts power to your transmission. It sounds like it if it will shift at high RPM's. It could be an electrical issue with the kick down mechanism for passing.

For example, you step on the gas, the vacuum pressure increases, locking your torque converter giving the transmission more power in combination with your transmission downshifting. This could have a flaw in it, causing your torque converter to engage and disengage at incorrect times.

Or it could be the torque converter itself not fully engaging all the time.

Just a thought, its hard to say from just q+a without actually seeing it. Any info helps a lot! Listen to what it sounds like when driving and when its trying to shift, when it tries to.

As for the transmission filter being clogged, it could have been mistreated and not rebuilt like the PO claimed. The film could be residue of gears/clutches grinding and wearing. Auto transmissions can't take much abuse when compared to Manual transmissions.

make sure to use the correct fluid. also check the level of fluid.

 

If the trans is toast, I hope it's not but it dosen't sound good... I recomend replacement with a used trans instead of rebuilding the current one. I've gone both routes on other cars (not a yota) and am usually dissapointed with rebuilds and pleased when I replaced with a totally different used trans.

you can get trans medic at oreillys ,it might help if it is a valve sticking in the valve body. i did a fluid change on a blazer and totally screwed up the shifting. a man at a local transmission shop had recommended the product. the only difference is my trans was working fine before the fluid change and was fairly clean. so it may not work for you.

 

Was there a lot of debris in the pan? A clogged filter will cause all sorts of problems. You need to find out what is clogging the filter. If you have a clutch pack that is disentigrating, you will have a slipping transmission and you will find debris in the pan.

 

Sounds like you need to flush it completly out again, and go with some Lucas auto tranny additive. You may have some of that crud caught in the solonoids. After mine sat submerged for a week, It took 3 complete flushes with cheap fluid before it started acting right. You may also check the coolant sensors on theback of the engine. You may have damaged one, or maybe unplugged on. I know at least 1 of them affect the shifting of the auto

 

I went through all this in January. It sounds toast to me... drive it until you cant anymore and do the 5speed swap instead of wasting money on "fix-it" fluids and definitly dont waste your money rebuilding it! $1600 was best deal I could find. That was just the rebuild no labor! ha! ill be done with mine today and im so hapy with the results!

 

there wasnt an excessive amount of debri in the pan. i cant figure out wat would clog the filter like that. i think im gonna drop the pan again today and take a look. does anybody know where i could find a 5 spd? all the toyotas at my pick-a-part have been completely picked clean.

 

Try and get a picture of what is clogging the filter so we can take a look. If they rebuilt the tranny without cleaning out the debris in the fluid cooler in the radiator, that can cause problems.
