Hello there I have an 86 toyota pickup 4x4 automatic, just had the transmission rebuilt but now the truck will run in L, 2, N, R and P fine. Except in D, it seems to start in 3rd gear, today I took it out for a drive on the highway and for the first 8 miles I had to shift between 2 and D. But then all of the sudden D started working, and it started downshifting and upshifting normally. I arrived at my destination and throughout the city the truck ran in D perfectly, I went in to eat at a restaurant and when I went out after a couple of hours and tried to drive it in D the truck went back to moving in 3rd gear. P.S. I've replaced the speed sensor in the back of the transmission since I thought that could be the cause. Other people have told me it might be the tps in the engine but haven't had a chance to check it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

 

Only thing to do with Auto Tranny's is take it back to the shop!

 

Sounds like the number two shift solenoid

 

Can't take it back to the shop, the guy who worked on it told me he replaced all the soft parts on the tranny and since it didn't fix this problem, he told me not to pay him but rather take it to another transmission shop. Is it hard to replace the shift solenoid?

 

Took me maybe an hour hardest part was cleaning the pan up and filling the tranny back up I replace #1 and 2 ordered off eBay from a place north of me in Oregon they are universal but seem to work good

 

What does soft parts even mean? I hope you didn't pay for the original rebuild either. If he did anything he should've done the solenoids, they are easy enough and usually the problem. If you replace #2 and the problem is fixed that means he didn't do anything at all when you took it back and is just trying to get rid of you. Angie's list, here we come...
