Auto transmission problem

Hi guys. I have a 89 Toyota pickup 3.0 with a auto transmission that I just bought a couple days ago. Everything seemed fine with the truck until I tried to back up my driveway yesterday. The transmission started slipping really bad, the od light came on, and the truck wouldn't back up the steepest part. The engine just reved up and wouldn't move. Reverse works on flat ground ok it seems though. I checked the fluid level and it is ok. Could this be a solenoid problem? The guy I bought the truck from said he just flushed the transmission recently and I have read that could be a mistake. Anyway is there anything I can do to fix this or do I need a new transmission? Any help will be very appreciated.

I just checked the fluid again and it is overfilled about a inch past the full mark. When I checked it yesterday it was cold and not perfectly level. Also it is slipping on level ground now probably was before I just didn't notice. Could the problem be too much fluid or a bad solenoid? I spent about 3 hours searching for answers on this forum last night but didn't find any. Thanks in advanced.

Was the conversion a lot of work? Do you have to be a very experienced mechanic to pull it off. Thanks for the response.

Are you checking the fluid level while it's running?

Yes, and at operating temp.

I'm currently looking into doing a 5 speed conversion though I really can't afford it right now. Thanks.

pull some of the fluid out and see what happens. and i dont think it could be a solenoid. get a FSM and find the trans troubleshooting tips.
