Auto Tranny Shifting only with lights off?!?!
#22
I got the truck like this. I'll prolly start with the simple thing to check out the charging system like i think it might be. I know the automatics are electronicaly controled so it maybe a power issue. But yea i get stuff mixed up to man its all good your forgiven i'll prolly pop to the yota dealer and see about that diagram later on. And also as a situation the person i got it from took the liberty or ripping the OD light out the entire thing... so thats one thing too.

Given that you go the truck like this and the OD light is ripped out makes me think he probably cut a wire and spliced it to one that he shouldnt have.

Might be cheaper than stopping by the dealer. Its seems like you are going to have to do some wire tracing. With the help of a wiring diagram it could be quite simple. good luck

Electrical problems are fun.
Off the top of my head, the only place that lights and transmission interact are in the reverse light circuit, unless you have trailer wiring. So first thing I'd do is remove and inspect all of your tail light bulbs and wiring. If you have a short or bad ground to the tail lamps, it can feed voltage into the reverse circuit, and that could definately confuse your transmission ECM.
On the older trucks, the O/D light is the diagnostic light for the transmission computer. So I'd repair that and see if there are any transmission codes.
HTH.

Yeah, it could be something as simple as a bad ground, but that could be difficult to locate and isolate. It could even be a partial short in the combo switch, which could be tricky to find, also. If the electrical system has been tampered with, it could be a real treat to track down all the connections .
There is some good FSM stuff on line including some schematic diagram extracts. It appears that the AT control system is a little different between the 6-cyl AT and the 22RE AT and the diagram I saw on line is for the 6-Cyl AT.
Glad I have a clutch.

An absolute shot in the dark, but I wonder if with all of the original owner's "wiring," if something was connected (accidentally) so that the control module for your tranny is only powered by the circuit that controls the lights...
In other words, no power to the lights, no power to the control module.
Probably not worth the $.02, but a thought none-the-less.

It's a weird problem in any event. Because the 4wd indicator light has been disabled/removed, my wag is leaning towards something that might cause a fault such as the speed sensor (assuming that would cause a fault -- as I said, I'm a clutch man). Perhaps the previous owner got tired of watching the indicator flash and disabled it rather than fixing it. Sort of like putting black tape over the ABS fault light. I heard a rumor once about somebody doing that.

Sounds to me like the guy was trying to put "shift lights" in and buggered the trans wiring up. The wiring is easy to follow so should not be to hard to figure out. There are only 6 or 7 wires.

Do you have the correct gauge cluster in the dash? Does it have the normal and power lights in the top right corner? Something is sending voltage to the ECT unit when the lights are on. The first thing I would do is unplug the ECT unit for the tranny. It's under the radio, at the front of the console.

turn on the lights and see which parts of the plug are hot. Here is the layout for the wire plug for the ECT.

I know its been along time but I FIXED IT! It turns out after alot of wire tracing and testing all it was, was my alternator! It had the wrong one in it. It didn't have the one that put out more voltage for automatics! Thanks guys shes runnin alright now!!!!
