Auto to manual transmission

I have an 86 4runner, the only thing I dont like about my truck is its an automatic. The engine was rebuilt 2 years ago, but now the tranny is slipping. Seems like a good time to swap it with a manual transmission right? Also the rear main seal can be replaced while the tranny is dropped, (its been leaking oil for awhile now)
About how much would it cost at a shop to get this done?

I don't think I've ever heard of somebody having a shop do it. Most people on this board anyway just do it themselves. I'm sure a shop would charge quite a bit.

You can probably find a shade tree mechanic to do the work for you, either way, you should probably be prepared to pay quite a bit.

The shop will probably charge around 8-12 hours of labor to do it, assuming you can find one that's ok with a little fabrication work. Some shops don't like straying past the "Bolt in an identical part that I just took out" sort of repairs.

Swapping the transmission is actually a pretty easy job. Anyone with a floor jack, and some basic hand tools can do it. Here's a thread detailing my auto to manual swap, and what was needed parts and labor wise.
