My 86 has auto hubs, and I'm working to change that. I have some Aisins from a 1988, and have the washers, 54mm nuts, and lock tab washer.

I took the auto hub body off, and following the 4x4 wire write up, tried to remove the (3) T20 torx bits. They are not budging and are almost impossible to get at straight on. I twisted and ruined my Torx wrench and may have stripped the torx head bolt. I find it hard to believe that this is how the hub bodies were installed at the factory. Is there a way to get the rest of the auto hub off and get better access to the torx bolts that hold the rest of the auto hub on?

You are lining up the gap in the spring to remove the first Torx Bolt then move it for the other 2

It has to be about 8 or 9 years ago.

yea...I can move the spring around to get better access, but not great. I'm sure that the method outlined works most of the time, but the times it doesn't (like now) I was wondering how to get at those Torx bolts if they will not come out/ are stripped. I have looked for other methods online, but all point back to the 4x4wire method. Maybe I'll try and take that spring out for better access.

 

Are you using a Torx socket with a extension??

that is what I used .

It is not like your going to reuse the hubs .

Do what you need to.

 

tried an L shaped Torx wrench and a torx socket....I don't know what the deal was, but after I moved the spring out of the way, I still couldn't get a straight shot at it. Ruined the Torx wrench and stripped the torx bolt. So I got after it with the drill and drilled the bolts out. Got it done and the manual hubs are on.
