I have the 1993 3.0 liter now and was given and Audi a4 engine....So I was thinking of doing a swap of engines.

Would I be able to save on my gas mileage as well?

Would this work? What kind of problems would I run into?

was it an auto or stick?
any machining skills?

I think you are opening the proverbial can of worms..

 

Which engine? There were options several in the A4. The 1.8T can be modified for over 400HP, best bet would be to use a stand alone ECU for custom tuning. I'm guessing it won't be cheap.

 

1.8T, 2.0T, 2.7 bi-turbo, 2.8? What are ya working with? I think the 2.7 bi would be a badass swap.

 

1.8T is a lot better engine than the 2.7T.....

Go for it...but I consider a port injected 4.3 wiring complicated so I don't even want to know what a 1.8t would be like.

 

what tranny u gonna run behind it? good luck finding an adapter to run any 4x4 tranny behind it

 

Lots of work to make it function for a pretty lackluster result IMO. Nevermind the world of suck that is working on an Audi anything and the sheer number of special tools required to work on most of their engines. This is one of those "If you have to ask..." type questions.

 

I think the "best" specialty tool i've had to use on one was the cam holder for changing the timing belts on the v6's. Thats after you tear off the entire front core support.

Lots of work, yeah, but it has potential depending on which engine it is. I never had an issue working on my old 2.8 or 2.0T. How many times do you go buy the SSTs for your truck instead of making your own and/or improvising?

Why would you do that? Audi is expensive and sucks to work on, my wife has the 1.8t in hers and it's a pain in the neck.

 

Yeah the boss ended up buying me the tools for a 2.8 timing belt the other day, I was between checks and didn't have the tools. Don't have to tear the whole lock carrier off, just slide it forward, ton easier with it off though and all it takes is the 10 minutes to evac the AC. 3 special tools for that one, cam holder, crank holder, and there is actually a tool for holding the lock carrier when you slide it forward, the bumper beam bolts do the same job though.

I haven't run into a a case where I needed an SST on a Toyota pickup, yes they are called for on occasion by the book but I've never seen the need. The one for pushing trunion bearing races out is way cool and I wish I had one though.

Chickenman, if your Audi experience stops at the 1.8T, consider yourself lucky, that's probably the best engine they've used in a long time.
