O.k., so no offense meant by my previous questioning. Much was answered.

I still however have no real way of knowing which transfer cases take ATF.

So, more specifically, which are they as in VF1A, VF2A, or are they the only other chain drive case I can find information on, the integral A340H?

Even more specifically, are there different versions of the same case that use different oil?

Most specifically, how do I tell one from another? As I know that(and this is from the 93 FSM) the 4wd automatic transmissions that can be found behind the 3vze have three different transfer cases, one requires ATF the other two require gear oil. Luckily there's pictures of both type in this case.

Edit: I have also found evidence(93 FSM) that a VF1A, can be found behind an A340F with the 22RE engine. Which I can only assume from mine(behind manual transmission) and/or the FSM, surely takes gear oil.

Now, I think I'm understanding where your confusion is coming from. You're misreading the info from the FSM. There are not 3 different transfer cases available for the combo of 3VZ automatic 4x4. As I mentioned before, only the A340H tranny/transfer combo, which takes nothing but ATF.

The VF1A can be found behind the G58 and A340F transmission (with a 22R-E). With the 3VZ-E, you'll find a VF1A only with a manual R150F transmission. The VF2A comes behind the A750F automatic transmission (on some newer vehicles like some 4x4 FJs). I've seen references of the VF2A coming on other transmissions, but I can't remember the details. The VF3AM came behind the A340F on V6 4x4 4Runners with selectable center differential (such as my 2002 4Runner). The RF1A transfer is found behind the W56 transmission (with a 22R-E). These all take gear oil.

The pics in the FSM link you have on your post tell you the following:

For the pic at the very bottom of page MA-17 that show the counter gear type and the planetary gear type... If you look at the caption at the top of the pic, it says "EX. 3VZ-E A/T". That means "Except 3VZ-E A/T"... so everything else but the 3VZ-E with automatic transmission.

The first pic on page MA-18 shows the rear of the A340H tranny/transfer, and the caption reads "3VZ-E A/T".

It is understood that they mean a 4x4 3VZ-E A/T, because of the fact that they are talking about the transfer case. If it were 2WD, the most popular transmission would have been the A340E, which obviously doesn't have a transfer case at all.

It's not practical to rhyme off every possible combination that Toyota came up with in a thread to say what kind of fluid goes in what. If there is something that is not answered here, people have to post up exact specs of their vehicles, then answers can be provided specifically for their case.
