A friend of mine who works at a toyota dealer told me to add sum atf in my 22re (burning oil) to see if it can clean up the oil control rings and limit my oil consumption (im burning a quart every 2 weeks)... he said run it for 1000km or so.... I put in about half a quart (a little weary)... what are all your thoughs on this idea? anyone tried it??

 

that trick has been around forever.

ATF is just a fine grade oil.

there are lots of little tricks like that floating around.

i use a glass of water to "steam clean" the inside of the 4cyl. pour a little in at a time turns to hot steam in the cylinders. oh and i do mean a little.

 

yea, a small stream will do the trick for that steam clean idea. Works wonders. Same concept as pouring Seafoam down there, minus all the harmful fumes and smoke lol.

As for the ATF, you need more than a 1/2 quart. Perhaps a full quart, in place of a quart of oil. It will clean that engine right up.

 

hmm intersting thanks man.. ill wait till my engine burns another half quart then throw in the rest of the bottle of atf.. think itll do any harm leaving it in for 1000 or so km before i change off the oil??

 

Try marvel Mystery oil it works great too.

Since Marvel mystery oil is not specifically an engine oil flush, I'd say you can add it anytime you want. However, if there is a lot of sludge under the valve cover, you may want to limit your driving to less than 100 miles with it in the crankcase.

What you may want to do instead is pick up some 15-40w shell Rotella diesel oil. First off, 22re's need thicker oil, especially during the summer (Toyota called for 20-50w in the early 80's for the 22r). Second, diesel oil contains a ton of detergents that keep everything clean since diesels inherently dirty up their oil fast. Last of all, diesel oil contains the extra zinc that manufactures are deleting because they "claim" zinc is hard on catalytic converters. Unfortunately, removing zinc is causing wiped camshaft lobes and severe rocker arm wear for motors NOT containing roller rocker and lifter setups.

I've been running 15-40w Rotella in my 22re for 4 thousand miles and I was amazed how pristine the rocker assembly looked when I adjusted the valves recently. It looked like 1984 all over again under the valve cover!

 

Just don't get too carried away............don't want to risk plugging up your oil pickup screen.

??What? How could you possibly plug up your oil intake screen?

 

Knockin loose big clumps of sludge that didn't disintegrate cause they where to big.

 

you'd have to have a pretty sludgy/chunky engine for that to happen, methinks.

I add a quart of ATF in my gas right before i fill the truck up and it works gret for cleaning the injectors and runs smoother.

would atf mess with my turbo? I've got 285k on her and I've heard of the atf in the oil trick but turbos are expensive..... ya know?

 

ATF is oil just like oil is oil. HOwever, ATF is thinner as has more detergent properties. Do not run straight ATF, put about a quart in, in place of a quart of oil during an oil change. Run it until the next oil change, and you will be golden. It will not harm your turbo, as long as you dont over-dilute the mixtire (IE run too much ATF)
