ARB rear air locker question

Mine had wiring issues so i've started to re-wire it. It has 2 switches in the cab, one activates the compressor, and another activates a solenoid i believe to open/shut the line, this way it can be decompressed and unlocked instantly (??) Is this how they work? I've seen them also with only a compressor on/off switch, how do you know how long to keep the compressor on to lock it? does it bleed off air and unlock on its own? wouldn't it keep unlocking periodically maybe when you don't want it to yet? how does this all work? (i was given this 4runner toy by my dad)

thanks

when you're wheelin and when you first put on the locker, flip on the compressor and just leave it on till you're out of locker territory. if it needs more air, it'll compress automatically for a few seconds (if the switch is on).

so there is some type of controlling unit involved here that measures/maintains a certain psi?

There has to be a pressure switch that turns the compressor off when the pressure gets too high:

yep

i should probably add that you'd only want to do that, like 4wd, offroad or somewhere where where the tires can slip. so not on the street.

thanks, I asked cause i'm getting ready to regear and install an ARB locker BUT i plan on doing the rear first and then sometime later, i'll be doing the front.
So untill i get the front done, i'll at least have a locked rear to play with.

Sure. Sometimes its fun to see how far up the trail you can get in 2wd (locked) while everyone else is in 4wd. Usually you have to give up when you need lower gearing but even then you can put it in 4wd hi/low and just leave your manual hubs dis-engaged Erik, you will be shocked at the difference the ARB will make. When I first got mine wheeling changed like night and day. I'm still open in the front end but also hope to get an ARB up there (and SAS) eventually when I swap my gears to 4:88s.

Back to the original question. When you first start out, it is a good idea to run the compressor until it automatically shuts off. Then you know you have adequate pressure to engage the locker. Hit your dash switch and you're off! If the line is leaking, the compressor will come back on and build up more pressure but unless you have a MAJOR air leak, the locker should stay engaged. My compressor cycles on and off every couple minutes (which indicates a decent air leak that I need to find and fix) but the ARB has never disengaged even with this leak.

DO NOT try to engage the ARB while moving!!!
